2 Chronicles 25:12
And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces. And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.
The verse belongs to the reign of Amaziah, the unstable and disloyal king of Judah who followed Joash and was followed by Azariah, that is Uzziah, and it is studied with 2 Chronicles 25 and 26. In its immediate setting it describes Amaziah's warfare against Edom, in which Judah subdued the Edomites by force yet gained no moral influence over the descendants of Esau. Within the larger history of 2 Chronicles 23 to 32, it illustrates the pattern that doing duty brought blessing while departing from God brought strife, captivity and great loss. That same history shows that God helped His people mightily when they sought Him with all the heart.
Amaziah's history stands in direct contrast to Jehoshaphat's, for Amaziah served God and accepted a prophet's testimony when it pleased him but resented, threatened and refused to heed the prophet when reproof came for the course he was pursuing. When the prophet came with reproof he resented it at once, threatened him with smiting, and refused to hearken to his counsel. Because Amaziah refused to heed that reproof, God determined to destroy him. His course is also the course of many others who follow their own counsel instead of accepting the counsel of the Lord's prophet.
