2 Chronicles 25:21
So Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another in the face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Beth-shemesh, which belongeth to Judah. So Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another in the face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Beth-shemesh, which belongeth to Judah.
The verse stands in the history of the kings of Judah given in 2 Chronicles 25-27, which goes over ground already covered in Kings yet gives fuller detail with interesting matters not found in the parallel accounts of the kings of Judah. Within that history it falls in the reign of Amaziah king of Judah, who follows Joash and precedes Azariah or Uzziah in the succession of the kings of Judah from Jehoshaphat to the close of the kingdom in B.C. 586. Joash did well while Jehoiada the priest lived, whereas Amaziah was unstable and disloyal.
The verse belongs to the account of Amaziah's expedition against Edom and records the battle that followed, when Joash king of Israel and Amaziah king of Judah met face to face at Beth-shemesh. In that account Amaziah gained the victory without the hired Israelite army. The record shows that turning away from God brought strife and captivity and great loss, while doing duty brought blessing. It shows also that God was ready to turn to aid His people and to work mightily for them when they sought Him with the whole heart.
