2 Chronicles 25:23
And Joash the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
This verse belongs to the history and reign of Amaziah, king of Judah, who was unstable and disloyal. In the succession of the kings of Judah his reign followed that of Joash, who was good as long as Jehoiada the priest lived, and came before that of Azariah, or Uzziah, a great king. The line runs from Jehoshaphat through the wicked Jehoram, Ahaziah, Athaliah, Joash, Amaziah, Azariah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh, Amon, and Josiah, ending in the vacillating reigns of Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah, closing in B.C. 586.
Departing from God in this reign brought strife and captivity and great loss, showing what happens when men do not remember God and how different things might have been if they had. By contrast, doing duty brings blessing, for God willingly turns to help His people and works mightily for them when they seek Him with all the heart. Amaziah's choices show that a costly commitment to a wrong course is no reason to continue in it, for God can provide more than what is forfeited when His direction is obeyed. That history does not explain the specific events described in this verse.
