Jehoash Breaks Down Jerusalem's Wallby emmanuel_higgins

2 Chronicles 25:24

And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obed-edom, and the treasures of the king’s house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.

2 Chronicles 25:24 belongs to the account of Amaziah's campaign against Edom and the consequences of his relying on Israel's army. The chapter's lesson is that Amaziah should not let the money already spent on hiring Israel's soldiers keep him from obeying God, for God could give him more than the hundred talents he feared losing, and he won victory without those soldiers.

The verse itself records the plunder taken by the victorious Israelite army after Amaziah dismissed it, including all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels found in the house of God with Obed-edom, and the treasures of the king's house, and hostages also, before returning to Samaria. It records what happened under Amaziah, the disloyal king of Judah, whose reign stands between Joash, who was good as long as Jehoiada the priest lived, and Azariah or Uzziah, a great king. That reign stands in the line of kings from Jehoshaphat through Jehoram, Ahaziah, Athaliah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh, Amon, Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin and Zedekiah that ended with the close of the kingdom of Judah in B.C. 586.

Amaziah was an unstable king, and his story stands in the record of 2 Chronicles 23 to 32, where doing duty brought blessing and departing from God brought strife and captivity and great loss. That record shows what might have been different if men had remembered God. That same history shows how willing God was to turn to help His people when they sought Him with all the heart and how mightily He wrought for them.
