2 Chronicles 25:27

Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the LORD they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there.

This verse belongs to the history of Judah as more fully told in Chronicles, standing in the sequence of reigns from Jehoshaphat through Ahaz that includes Amaziah. Among those kings — Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, Ahaziah, Athaliah, Jehoash, Amaziah, Azariah, Jotham, and Ahaz — Amaziah was far above the average, though Jehoshaphat alone was truly good.

Earlier in the chapter Amaziah was warned not to rely on Israel's army and to trust that God could give him more than the money he would lose by dismissing it, and God gave him victory without that army. After Amaziah turned away from following the LORD, a conspiracy was made against him in Jerusalem, and though he fled to Lachish, they sent to Lachish after him and slew him there. His turning away from following the LORD was disloyalty, showing an unstable character.

Departing from God brings strife, captivity and great loss, while doing duty brings blessing, and things would have been different for Amaziah if he had remembered God. Honoring God and receiving His blessing are worth more than earthly riches. God is willing to turn to help His people and work mightily for them when they seek Him with all the heart.
