And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
This verse closes the reign of Amaziah in the continuing history of Judah told more fully in Chronicles, falling in the portion covering chapters 25-26 within chapters 23-32. Amaziah was an unstable and disloyal king of Judah, far above the average king of Judah yet not a truly good king like Jehoshaphat. He followed Joash, who was good as long as Jehoiada the priest lived, and was followed by Azariah, or Uzziah, a great king, in the line running from Jehoshaphat through Jehoram, Ahaziah, Athaliah and Joash and on through Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh, Amon, Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin and Zedekiah to the close in B.C. 586. His history teaches not to continue a wrong course merely because money has already been spent: at the advice of God's prophet he dismissed the army of Israel, and God gave him victory without it, showing God's blessing is worth more than earthly riches. His record shows that departing from God brought strife and captivity and great loss, and that things might have been different if men had remembered God.
