2 Chronicles 25:4
But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.
Amaziah put to death the servants who had murdered his father, yet he spared their children in obedience to the law in the book of Moses. This act belongs to the period when he was serving God, but he accepted the testimony of the prophet only when it pleased him. The law he followed establishes individual accountability, that fathers are not to be put to death for the sins of their children nor children for the sins of their fathers, but every person dies for his own sin.
That same declaration that every man shall die for his own sin shows the destiny of the wicked. In his selective heeding of the prophet Amaziah stands in direct contrast to Jehoshaphat, who believed the prophet of the Lord and prospered. When the prophet later came to Amaziah with reproof for the course he was pursuing, Amaziah at once resented it, threatened the prophet with smiting, and refused his counsel, so God determined to destroy him. His history in this is also the history of many others who follow their own counsel instead of accepting the counsel of the prophet of the Lord.
