2 Chronicles 26:23

So Uzziah slept with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the field of the burial which belonged to the kings; for they said, He is a leper: and Jotham his son reigned in his stead.

Uzziah was struck with leprosy because in pride he entered the temple to burn incense and opposed the priests who withstood him, and for that transgression against the Lord he was shut out from the temple and its worship. He continued a leper to the day of his death. His death is described as sleeping with his fathers, which is the Bible's manner of speaking of death as a sleep and of the condition of the dead.

He was buried with his fathers in the field of the burial that belonged to the kings, near the royal burial place yet outside and apart from the kings themselves, and the reason given is that he was a leper. The same leprosy that separated him in burial is the explanation for laying him in that field rather than among the kings. Upon his death his son Jotham reigned in his stead and succeeded him as king.

That sleep of death cuts off all hope of future life except through the resurrection of the dead. His reign stands as proof that presumption and departure from God bring loss. The account of 2 Chronicles 26:16-23 also confirms the earthquake in his reign, which is connected with his wrongdoing and regarded as a judgment from God.
