2 Chronicles 26:8

And the Ammonites gave gifts to Uzziah: and his name spread abroad even to the entering in of Egypt; for he strengthened himself exceedingly.

Uzziah strengthened himself exceedingly, and this strengthening marks a stage in his history that ended in disastrous presumption. That presumption was committed in violation of the plain command of Jehovah that none but the descendants of Aaron should officiate as priests. In defiance of that command the king entered the sanctuary to burn incense upon the altar.

Azariah the high priest and his associates confronted him and remonstrated with him. They pleaded with him to turn from his course. They urged that he had trespassed and that it would not be for his honor.
