2 Chronicles 28:10
And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for bondmen and bondwomen unto you: but are there not with you, even with you, sins against the LORD your God? And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for bondmen and bondwomen unto you: but are there not with you, even with you, sins against the LORD your God?
The prophet Oded met Israel's victorious army returning from its defeat of Judah and confronted its intent to keep the children of Judah and Jerusalem for bondmen and bondwomen. Judah had been delivered into Israel's hand because of its own sins and idolatry, which God had allowed and had not prevented Him from permitting its defeat. Yet that divine permission gave Israel no license for cruelty and oppression, for Israel itself was guilty of sins against the Lord its God. To enslave their brethren under such guilt was wicked, and to persist in that injustice would bring upon Israel itself the fierce anger of the Lord and His judgments.
The rebuke prevailed, so the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the princes and the congregation. Leaders of Ephraim then rose to care for the captives, supplying their needs from the spoil and ministering to the weak among them. They returned them to their kin and people, bringing the feeble back to their brethren.
