Ephraimites Clothe and Carry the Captives of Judahby emmanuel_higgins

2 Chronicles 28:15

And the men which were expressed by name rose up, and took the captives, and with the spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and arrayed them, and shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon asses, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren: then they returned to Samaria.

The men named in the verse were leading men of Ephraim who stood up when the prophet rebuked the army for intending to keep their fellow Israelites of Judah as slaves. Their rising up was a response to that rebuke against enslaving brethren, turning the captors away from holding the Judean captives in bondage. With the spoil taken in battle they clothed all among the captives who were naked, arrayed and fully equipped them, and put shoes on their feet. They gave them food to eat and drink, and anointed them in tender care for their suffering bodies.

They set all the feeble among the captives on donkeys and carried them, rather than forcing them to walk. They brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren, so they could rejoin their own people and relatives. In this the victors abandoned their plan to enslave or sell the captives and to go on in cruelty. In its place they showed mercy expressed in practical care and full restoration to home and kin.

The act stands as an example and model of practical compassion toward people who have been oppressed by others. It exposes and condemns the oppression of fellow believers by those who should regard them as brethren.
