2 Chronicles 28:19
For the LORD brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of Israel; for he made Judah naked, and transgressed sore against the LORD. For the LORD brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of Israel; for he made Judah naked, and transgressed sore against the LORD.
The Lord brought Judah low because of its continued rebellion and transgression under Ahaz. This bringing low was a chastisement for transgression, an affliction sent because of that rebellion. Instead of repenting, Ahaz sinned still more even while Judah was being chastened.
In that unrepentant course he sacrificed to and worshiped the gods of Damascus, reasoning that since they had helped the kings of Syria they might help him too. His worship of the gods that had helped Syria deepened Judah's apostasy.
