Ahaz shut the doors of the temple and brought its sacred services to an end, stopping both the offerings and the burning of incense. The people forsook the house of God and erected altars to heathen deities at the street corners of Jerusalem. With the temple closed and such idol worship multiplied, idolatry seemed to have triumphed.
