Ephraimites Clothe and Carry the Captives of Judahby emmanuel_higgins

2 Chronicles 28:9

But a prophet of the LORD was there, whose name was Oded: and he went out before the host that came to Samaria, and said unto them, Behold, because the LORD God of your fathers was wroth with Judah, he hath delivered them into your hand, and ye have slain them in a rage that reacheth up unto heaven.

Judah was given into the hand of Israel because the Lord God of their fathers was angry with Judah on account of its sins. That divine permission for defeat gave Israel no excuse for cruelty, for its army had slaughtered the Judahites in a fury so great that it reached up to heaven. Beyond the killing, the victors had taken captives whom they meant to keep as slaves or to sell. As the host came back toward Samaria, the prophet Oded went out to meet them and rebuked them for this injustice. He warned them that persisting in such an unjust course would bring God's judgment upon themselves.
