2 Chronicles 29:34

But the priests were too few, so that they could not flay all the burnt offerings: wherefore their brethren the Levites did help them, till the work was ended, and until the other priests had sanctified themselves: for the Levites were more upright in heart to sanctify themselves than the priests.

2 Chronicles 29:34 belongs to Hezekiah's restoration of true religion after Judah's idolatry, when the temple was purified, its worship restored, and the priests and Levites were brought back to service in the temple. The work of cleansing the temple and returning to the Lord was carried out in an orderly way, with the Levites helping when the priests were too few.

Hezekiah began this work when he came to the throne at only twenty-five years old as the son of a bad father, making the opening of the temple and the re-establishment of the worship of the true God his first work. That undertaking took ability and determination because evil beliefs and practices were still strong upon the people even though they were dissatisfied with conditions under his father and grandfather.

Under his direction the temple was cleared of the accumulated rubbish of years, and messengers were sent with letters from city to city through the northern kingdom inviting the people to forsake idols and return to the true God and come to Jerusalem. A great Passover feast lasting fourteen days was held with many sacrifices offered with great gladness as the greatest revival since the time of Solomon. The people went through the city breaking down idols, cutting down groves, and destroying high places and altars.

The priests were too few to flay and prepare all the burnt offerings, so their brethren the Levites helped them until the work was ended and until the other priests had sanctified themselves. Too few priests were ready while the rest were still making themselves holy. The Levites were more upright in heart and more wholehearted than the priests in sanctifying themselves.

The account presents Hezekiah's reform and return to the Lord as a course that pleased God and brought his blessing.
