2 Chronicles 29:7

Also they have shut up the doors of the porch, and put out the lamps, and have not burned incense nor offered burnt offerings in the holy place unto the God of Israel.

The verse describes the condition of worship near the end of the reign of the apostate King Ahaz. Shutting the doors of the porch meant that the courts of the house of God were deserted, its doors were locked, and its sacred services were interrupted. Putting out the lamps meant that the candlesticks were no longer kept burning before the altar. The failure to offer burnt offerings meant that no offerings were made for the sins of the people.

The failure to burn incense meant that no sweet incense ascended at the time of the morning and the evening sacrifice. At the same time, the inhabitants of the city boldly set up altars for the worship of heathen deities on street corners throughout Jerusalem. In that condition heathenism had seemingly triumphed and the powers of darkness had well-nigh prevailed.
