2 Chronicles 31:1

Now when all this was finished, all Israel that were present went out to the cities of Judah, and brake the images in pieces, and cut down the groves, and threw down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and Benjamin, in Ephraim also and Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the children of Israel returned, every man to his possession, into their own cities.

The verse records the next step after the Passover, taking place as the worshipers went back to their homes. Before this, with broken hearts they had confessed their sins and with resolute purpose had turned to God for forgiveness and help, and they had been accepted in worship. Yet an important work still remained, and it required those returning to take an active part.

They went out to the cities of Judah and Benjamin and into Ephraim and Manasseh and completely broke up idol worship. They smashed the images in pieces, cut down the groves, and threw down the high places and the altars, continuing until they had utterly destroyed them all. The doing of this work bore evidence to and proved the genuineness of the reformation that had been wrought in them. Only after that complete destruction did every man return to his own possession in his own city.
