2 Chronicles 31:15

And next him were Eden, and Miniamin, and Jeshua, and Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah, in the cities of the priests, in their set office, to give to their brethren by courses, as well to the great as to the small:

This verse belongs to the account of Hezekiah restoring worship and the service of the priests and Levites. The surrounding chapter shows that the tithes and offerings brought by the people supplied and supported those serving in the temple. The verse describes appointed officials serving in their set office in the cities of the priests to distribute portions to their fellow priests by courses and assigned duties, to both the great and the small.

The distribution was an orderly system in which appointed Levite assistants under the chief treasurer gave out from a central treasury each man's daily portion for his service according to his charge, so that nothing was haphazard and no part of the work was well supplied while another was left to languish. As those who ministered in the temple service were supported by the tithe, so the Lord has ordained that those who preach the gospel should live of the gospel, meaning by the tithe. The tithe belongs to the priesthood, continuing from the order of Melchizedek before Moses through the order of Levi into the gospel dispensation while Jesus serves as high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek, so the tithe endures as long as the priesthood endures.
