The verse stands in the account of Hezekiah restoring true worship after apostasy and bringing the priests and Levites back into active service in the temple. That restoration of order and ministry provides the setting for the reckoning of the priests by their fathers' houses and the Levites from twenty years old and upward in their charges by their courses. In that setting the people faithfully returned their tithes and offerings for the support of the restored service. Their giving did not stop when enough had been gathered to meet present needs, but continued in abundance beyond immediate necessity.
