2 Chronicles 31:2
And Hezekiah appointed the courses of the priests and the Levites after their courses, every man according to his service, the priests and Levites for burnt offerings and for peace offerings, to minister, and to give thanks, and to praise in the gates of the tents of the LORD.
The passage stands in the history running from 2 Chronicles 25 to Ezra 5, which covers the same ground as Kings while adding fuller detail on the kings of Judah. Within that larger history it belongs to the section 2 Chronicles 30 to 33.
It shows Hezekiah restoring organized temple worship by appointing the courses of the priests and the Levites after their courses, every man according to his service. Their appointed work was for burnt offerings and for peace offerings, to minister, and to give thanks and to praise in the gates of the tents of the Lord. The appointment was part of his reform after the people destroyed images and idols. It prepared for his command that the people give the portion due the priests and the Levites so they could be encouraged in the law of the Lord, which the people answered at once with abundant tithes and offerings.
It shows Hezekiah's people responding to the Lord with generous giving in support of the priests and Levites in their service, demonstrating that those who give themselves to God give liberally, even in poverty. It shows what God has commanded in regard to the tithe, that the tithe is the Lord's and is holy unto the Lord and rightfully belongs to Him and must be rendered to Him as He directs. Its history was not written to exalt man but to give precious spiritual lessons because it is directly connected with God's historical revelation which culminated in Christ. Christ is the central light shedding illuminating rays through the whole of Scripture and the central sun holding together all its various parts, so without Christ its meaning and message is gone; it testifies of Christ and is to be respected and searched for wisdom unto salvation and eternal life.
