Hezekiah and Isaiah Pray as an Angel Descendsby emmanuel_higgins

2 Chronicles 32:21

And the LORD sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword.

God delivered Jerusalem by sending an angel who cut off all the mighty men of valor and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria, saving Israel from destruction. The stroke came that very night as a terrible judgment upon the army sent to take Jerusalem, smiting 185,000 men. Tidings of the disaster reached Sennacherib while he was still guarding the approach to Judea from Egypt, and stricken with fear he hastened to depart. Following the destruction he returned with shame of face in disgrace to his own land.

After returning he was slain with the sword in the house of his god by those of his own house, members of his own family who came forth of his own bowels. He did not reign long after his return, and in harmony with prophecy concerning his sudden end, his son Esarhaddon reigned in his stead. The angel was sent on a mission of mercy to the children of God, as one way holy angels have in all ages ministered to God's people. The verse is an example of God protecting His people through angels who shield the righteous from evil and from a threatening enemy. The event demonstrates the power of heavenly angels as agents of God.
