Manasseh Raises an Asherah Pole in the Temple Courtby emmanuel_higgins

2 Chronicles 33:4

Also he built altars in the house of the LORD, whereof the LORD had said, In Jerusalem shall my name be for ever.

The setting is the reign of Manasseh, who deliberately set aside the statutes recorded by Moses. The rejection centered especially on the book of the covenant in Deuteronomy, the very instruction whose observance had made the reign of Hezekiah prosperous. In that context of disregard, the temple copy of the book of the law was lost through careless neglect during Manasseh's reign. As a result, for many years the people generally were deprived of its instruction.
