2 Chronicles 34:15
And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan. And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.
This verse belongs to the recovery of the law in Josiah's time, when the long-misplaced book was unexpectedly found during repairs to the temple. Its finding and reading was to bring deep repentance and a return to the Lord, as it did in the days of Josiah and of Ezra. The book was the temple copy of the law, neglected and lost during Manasseh's reign. Its loss left the people without its instruction for many years.
Hilkiah found the book in the house of the Lord and delivered it to Shaphan the scribe. That delivery made the law available to be read and studied again. It was read to King Josiah and then to the people, exposing their departure from God's statutes. Hearing it brought deep repentance and return to the Lord. Josiah humbled himself, repented, entered a wholehearted covenant to keep God's commandments, and labored to lead the people back to serving God. The discovery and study of this portion of Scripture thus brought a reformation that temporarily averted threatened judgments.
