2 Chronicles 35:22
Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and hearkened not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo. Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and hearkened not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo.
The warning that reached Josiah from Necho was in truth a message from God, though it did not come to Josiah directly but through Egypt's ambassadors. It was the words from the mouth of God, entrusted to a foreign king to deliver. Josiah would not turn back from his purpose, but refused to heed those words. Instead he disguised himself so that he might fight, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo.
In doing so he chose his own way and his own course, partly because to turn back with his army would have seemed humiliating. He was confident that God had not spoken directly to him, and that confidence led him to disregard the warning. He therefore entered a battle he should not have entered, and was killed there. God's earlier favor toward him and God's promise to him did not shield him from the consequences of disobeying God's word.
