2 Chronicles 4:15

One sea, and twelve oxen under it.

The verse belongs to the record of the building of Solomon's temple of God and its sacred vessels. That building followed Solomon's call to the kingdom and the establishment of his reign. The temple so built was a permanent sanctuary on a larger scale than what went before, constructed according to a divinely given pattern.

Like the tabernacle it had two holy places and vessels of the same kinds, with the same plan of arrangement and ministry. Its arrangement in turn served as a pattern of the heavenly temple. The verse itself lists, among the furnishings made by Hiram Abiff, the one large bronze sea resting on and supported by the twelve oxen beneath it. That great sea on twelve oxen shows how the sanctuary vessels in the temple were enlarged and made more numerous than those of the tabernacle. The chapter presents Hiram as completing the work for which Solomon employed him, and it gives no support to the claim that he was murdered and buried beneath the Most Holy place.
