Solomon Dedicates the Temple in Jerusalemby KandD

2 Chronicles 6:12

And he stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands:

This verse opens Solomon's prayer at the dedication of the temple after it had been finished, with him standing before the altar of the Lord in the presence and hearing of all the congregation of Israel. He prayed kneeling down upon his knees on a brazen scaffold, spreading forth his hands toward heaven. His prayer was vocal and public, and its words have been preserved in the Bible.

His example gives evidence in the Word of God for public prayer. When the prayer ended, God answered it by sending fire from heaven to consume the burnt offering and by appearing to Solomon by night to say that He had heard the prayer. The prayer expresses loftiest piety blended with deepest humility. The verse teaches that the God of heaven is not confined to temples built for Him like the gods of the heathen, but He meets with His people by His Spirit when they assemble in the house dedicated to His worship, visits them in their homes and wherever they may be with special revelations of His goodness, and may be worshiped by His children in every place.
