2 Chronicles 6:23
Then hear thou from heaven, and do, and judge thy servants, by requiting the wicked, by recompensing his way upon his own head; and by justifying the righteous, by giving him according to his righteousness. Then hear thou from heaven, and do, and judge thy servants, by requiting the wicked, by recompensing his way upon his own head; and by justifying the righteous, by giving him according to his righteousness.
This petition belongs to Solomon's prayer at the dedication of the temple after it was erected. He offered it vocally while kneeling on a brazen scaffold in the presence and hearing of the people of Israel. Its words are recorded in the Bible. It was answered when the Lord sent fire from heaven to consume the burnt offering, and by appearing to Solomon by night to say He had heard his prayer.
The verse asks God to hear from heaven and to act to judge His servants and their disputes justly. It asks Him to requite the wicked by recompensing his way upon his own head, bringing the consequences of his own conduct back upon him. It asks Him to justify the righteous by declaring him just and giving to him according to his righteousness.
It thus gives evidence from the Word of God for public prayer. The prayer does not confine God to the temple, for He meets His people by His Spirit wherever they gather to worship, and they may worship Him in every place.
