2 Chronicles 6:30
Then hear thou from heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and render unto every man according unto all his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou only knowest the hearts of the children of men:) Then hear thou from heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and render unto every man according unto all his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou only knowest the hearts of the children of men:)
This petition belongs to Solomon's prayer at the erection and dedication of the temple. He offered it vocally while kneeling on a brazen scaffold in the presence and hearing of the people of Israel, and its words are preserved in the Bible. God heard the prayer and answered it by sending fire from heaven to consume the burnt offering and by appearing to Solomon by night to say He had heard his prayer.
The prayer asks God to hear from heaven, His dwelling place, for He alone knows the hearts of the children of men. Upon that hearing He forgives and renders to every man according to all his ways. This was prayed for times of calamity and affliction, when each one knows his own trouble, grief, and distress and spreads forth his hands toward the temple seeking forgiveness and help, to the end that the people may fear God and walk in His ways.
Its setting at the temple dedication shows that God is not confined to the temple. He meets His people by His Spirit when they gather for worship, and His children may worship Him wherever they are.
