2 Chronicles 6:34
If thy people go out to war against their enemies by the way that thou shalt send them, and they pray unto thee toward this city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built for thy name; If thy people go out to war against their enemies by the way that thou shalt send them, and they pray unto thee toward this city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built for thy name;
The verse belongs to Solomon's prayer offered after the temple was erected, at its dedication. He prayed it aloud while kneeling upon a brazen scaffold in the presence and hearing of the people of Israel, and its words are preserved in the Bible. When the prayer ended, fire was sent from heaven to consume the burnt offering, and the Lord appeared to Solomon by night to say that He had heard the prayer.
When God's people went out to war against their enemies by the way He sent them, along the route He directed, they were to pray toward the chosen city of Jerusalem and the house built for His name, asking Him to hear their prayer from heaven and uphold their cause. The direction to pray toward the city and temple does not mean that God is confined there, for by His Spirit He meets His people when they gather for worship, visits them in their homes and wherever they are, and gives them the privilege of worshiping Him in every place.
