2 Chronicles 6:37
Yet if they bethink themselves in the land whither they are carried captive, and turn and pray unto thee in the land of their captivity, saying, We have sinned, we have done amiss, and have dealt wickedly; Yet if they bethink themselves in the land whither they are carried captive, and turn and pray unto thee in the land of their captivity, saying, We have sinned, we have done amiss, and have dealt wickedly;
This verse belongs to Solomon's prayer at the dedication of the temple after it was erected. It was offered vocally while kneeling on a brazen scaffold in the presence and hearing of the people of Israel. Its manner shows that public prayer has warrant in the Word of God. The words of that prayer are given and recorded in the Bible. After the prayer ended it was answered when God sent fire from heaven and consumed the burnt offering, and the Lord appeared to Solomon by night and said He had heard his prayer.
The captivity it describes follows the people's sin. People carried into captivity can turn back to God even in the land where they are held, recognizing and confessing their sin, turning to Him, and praying. Their confession acknowledges sin, wrongdoing, and wickedness, saying they have sinned, have done amiss, and have dealt wickedly. Distance from homeland and temple does not prevent seeking God, for He is not confined to a temple but meets His people by His Spirit when they gather to worship, visits them in their homes and wherever they are, and gives them the privilege of worshiping Him in every place.
They pray toward the land, the city, and the house associated with His name. Solomon pleads for God to hear them, uphold their cause, and forgive them.
