2 Chronicles 6:7

Now it was in the heart of David my father to build an house for the name of the LORD God of Israel.

The words were spoken by Solomon in his prayer after the temple was built. He prayed aloud while kneeling on a bronze platform, in the presence and hearing of Israel, and the words of his prayer were recorded. After the prayer, fire came from heaven and consumed the burnt offering, and the Lord later told Solomon that He had heard his prayer.

They mean that it was in the heart of David to build a house for the name of the Lord God of Israel. That was his desire and intention, deeply cherished within him. His desire was good, but the Lord appointed his son to do the building rather than David himself. So Solomon, David's son, carried out David's purpose as God had promised.

In connection with David's intention, Solomon dedicated the completed temple to God. It was dedicated as a house called by His name, planned to honor His name. Yet Solomon's later pride led him to accept praise for the building. Therefore people came to call it Solomon's temple instead of giving the glory to God.
