2 Chronicles 7:16
For now have I chosen and sanctified this house, that my name may be there for ever: and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually. For now have I chosen and sanctified this house, that my name may be there for ever: and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.
God chose and sanctified the house Solomon built, setting it apart as the place where His name would dwell forever, with His eyes and His heart there perpetually in continual attention, care, favor, and presence directed toward it. These words were His answer to Solomon's prayer and supplication after the seven-day dedication of the temple, when fire came down from heaven and the glory of the Lord filled the house, marking His acceptance and blessing. His promised presence meant meeting Israel by His Spirit when the people assembled there for worship, though He is not confined to a temple made by hands, since heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him.
The glorious building was to stand forever as a perpetual sign of His special favor to His chosen people, but that forever promise was conditional on faithfulness. If Solomon and Israel walked before God as David walked, in integrity of heart and uprightness, keeping all His commandments, statutes, and judgments, He would establish the throne of Israel forever. Israel itself was set apart among the nations because it preserved the true worship of God by keeping His commandments.
The promise belongs with His call for His people to humble themselves, pray, seek Him, and turn from sin, as His message about the house and the people's response to Him, which they are urged to heed. If they or their children turned from following Him to serve and worship other gods, He would cut off Israel from the land He gave them and cast the house hallowed for His name out of His sight to rejection and destruction. Then Israel would become a proverb and a byword among all people.
