2 Chronicles 7:18

Then will I stablish the throne of thy kingdom, according as I have covenanted with David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man to be ruler in Israel.

This promise was God's conditional answer to Solomon after the dedication of the temple. It came after Solomon had spent seven days dedicating the house, when God declared He had heard Solomon's prayer and had hallowed the house to put His name there forever, with His eyes and heart there perpetually.

God pledged to establish the throne of Solomon's kingdom over Israel forever, fulfilling His covenant with David his father that there should never fail a man from his line to be ruler in Israel. That establishment was offered on condition that Solomon walk before God as David had walked, in integrity of heart and uprightness, doing all that God commanded and keeping His statutes and judgments. Solomon's prosperity and honor depended on continued faithful obedience, and turning from God would bring loss of God's favor.

Turning aside to serve and worship other gods would bring cutting off Israel from the land and casting the hallowed house out of God's sight, making Israel a proverb and byword among all people. If Israel had remained faithful and true to God, the glorious building was to stand forever as a perpetual sign of God's special favor to His chosen people. They were called peculiar because they alone among all nations preserved the true worship of God by keeping His commandments.

Had Solomon remained humble and served God, his reign could have blessed the surrounding nations. A faithful reign by Solomon would have exalted Israel among the surrounding nations as a wise and understanding people.
