2 Chronicles 8:14
And he appointed, according to the order of David his father, the courses of the priests to their service, and the Levites to their charges, to praise and minister before the priests, as the duty of every day required: the porters also by their courses at every gate: for so had David the man of God commanded.
This text belongs to the account of Solomon's reign in the first part of 2 Chronicles, which covers the undivided kingdom and presents it in chronological order. Solomon assigned the priests to their specific duties according to the order established by David his father. In doing so he followed David's example by uniting king and priest in his own person.
The verse shows the Levitical priesthood organized into twenty-four courses, each course having its chief or governor of the sanctuary. That division extended from Israel's coming out of Egypt until the cross and continued down to the time of Christ. Since the Levitical priests served unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, the twenty-four courses are a type of Christ's priestly work. The antitype is in the first apartment of the heavenly sanctuary, where twenty-four elders sit on twenty-four seats around the throne with seven lamps of fire before it, worshipping the Lamb as redeemed kings and priests and serving as the Lord's assistants, while the rest of the multitude led captive at the ascension serve in courses under those twenty-four chiefs.
