2 Corinthians 1:11

Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.

Believers are to help God's workers together by prayer for them, so that the gift granted through the intercession of many leads many to give thanks on their behalf, and in its original setting this meant the early believers praying for Paul, so that thanks was given by many on his behalf for the gift bestowed on him through many persons. The verse thus illustrates the wonderful blessing that rested on the generosity of the early Christian church toward the needy. That unselfish generosity threw the church into a transport of joy, because its members knew God's power was being borne to the needy. Their energetic benevolence proved that they had not received God's grace in vain.

Such generosity can be produced only by sanctification of the Spirit through the Word, and to both believers and unbelievers it is a miracle of grace. The verse therefore calls believers to stand firm in faith rather than in humanly devised plans, to act courageously and be strong, and to do everything with love. It calls them to rejoice in the testimony of conscience that their conduct in the world, and especially toward fellow believers, has been in simplicity and godly sincerity, not by worldly wisdom but by God's grace.
