2 Corinthians 1:19
For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea. For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.
The Son of God proclaimed among the Corinthians was not yes and no but yes, meaning He and His truth are steadfast, clear, decided and unchanging, and true preaching never takes back what God's word has established. God Himself is not yes and no but yes and amen in Christ, decided, dependable and unchangeable, never saying yes at one time and no at another. His promises in Christ are therefore firm and certain, because a promise is worth what the truthfulness of its maker is worth, and unlike men He stands behind His word and keeps truth forever. His word and doctrine are likewise sure, settled and harmonious, never contradicting themselves or setting one passage against another. That certainty calls for honoring His words by believing them without wavering, and for preaching their binding claims distinctly and decidedly so minds are brought to decision and character is transformed.
Christ and His Word Certain
The Son of God, Jesus Christ, preached among the Corinthians by Paul and Silvanus and Timotheus was not yea and nay but yea in Him, which means Christ and His truth are steadfast, clear, decided, certain and consistent. Paul could not say nay where he had said yea, and he with his fellow workers did not retract doctrine once established from God's word, while still allowing flexibility in customs and ceremonies not essential to faith. His preaching was made ever yea and amen because God wrought through him by a multitude of revelations and wonderful visions to make the Gentiles obedient by word and deed, accompanying the word with a power that could not be withstood. Those revelations so substantiated his faith that his words were established by an immovable weight of evidence, and true glory is not in self-exaltation or in claiming a faultless character but in humbling self before God through Jesus Christ and representing Christ's life in the life.
God Himself is not yea and nay but yea and amen in Christ, meaning He is decided, true, steady, dependable and unchangeable. He never vacillates, never says yes at one time and no at another, and His work in Christ has the same certainty and truthfulness as Christ Himself, without mixture or changeableness. His directions are therefore to be followed whatever the result may be. God's promises in Christ are yea and amen, firm, certain and dependable, because promises are worth what the truthfulness of the maker is worth. Unlike men who promise and break their word, God stands behind what He promises, ever mindful of His covenant, always the same, keeping truth forever with no unfaithfulness in Him, His truth enduring to all generations, so that heaven and earth will pass away but not one word of God will fail.
The promise of salvation is fulfilled for those who repent and forsake sin, for God receives them and works with their efforts to form a righteous character. Salvation through Christ does not leave sinners remaining in sin but requires giving it up and accepting Christ's righteousness by faith, and salvation is found only in Christ. The Word of God and doctrine of Christ are not yea and nay but yea and amen, meaning Scripture is sure, firm, settled, unified and harmonious and does not contradict itself. One text rightly explained never sets one passage against another, never denies the sanctuary truth that stands so prominently with many confirmations, and never gives conflicting special light to different people who each claim to be specially taught while holding different theories and drawing away from the body. Christ crucified is the foundation of the gospel, and its truths are to be applied practically to daily life.
The certain yea and amen message was spoken by the Son of God, Jesus Christ, through the representative men of Israel and is spoken as truly now as then. It is the same Christ who afterward came to stand at the head of the race as a divine-human Saviour. Its definite instructions about keeping His commandments, statutes and judgments, fearing Him, walking in His ways, loving and serving Him with all the heart and soul, with covenant mercy and blessing to those who love Him and keep His commandments, are given to be brought into present service to help reach the standard of righteousness and advance in conquest. His law is a transcript of His character. His Word in this is certain and binding, as expressed in the Word that is not yea and nay but yea and amen in Christ.
Living and Preaching the Yea
Ministers are not to set themselves up as lords over faith and conscience or to have dominion over faith, and no worker through whom souls are brought to truth is to be exalted as supreme or supposed infallible. Endowments are valuable only as entrusted talents to magnify truth, and the worker is never to exalt self or seek to rule, but as a wise steward to do service in sincerity and humility, imparting what has been received and remembering that only God can impress the mind and purify the heart. The work is to be done by faith in fulfilling duty, without severity and authority, but as helpers of joy who reveal Christlikeness, speak truth in love to enlighten others, and lead by kindly persuasion to renounce error while believers stand by faith.
God's workers must be settled in principle and not drift alone with unsettled principles warped and distorted by impulse. Such drifting misrepresents the professed truth and does lasting injury to the soul, while settled principles have a molding influence for right and truth that appeals to reason gives a decided influence. This requires accepting and practicing the light sent on healthful living and giving it by precept and example rather than acting in opposition to it.
Because God and His Word are certain and dependable while little dependence can be placed on man, as apostasies permitted by God prove, dependence is to be placed on God and not on man and ministers in all churches are always to look to God and bear a decided testimony. They must open the Word and show its certainty distinctly and with clearness, preaching its binding claims including the law as certain and binding and as a transcript of character, without confusing minds by their own interpretations. Truth so presented works a decided reformation in the heart, proceeding from inward to outward and transforming character, or all labor to bring souls to knowledge of truth is null and void. They must watch with unceasing vigilance and diligence and follow up every advantage to bring the mind to decision before the first powerful impression wears away, laboring in Christ's stead for salvation as those who must give an account, for if through unfaithfulness souls perish their blood is upon the unfaithful, while those who listen to human sophistry and discard God's Word remain responsible for themselves.
The firm yea calls for honoring God's words by believing them, not treating them with indifference, doubt or disbelief, and not waiting for further evidence or sending far away for human advice and counsel when the mighty Counselor has spoken. It calls for coming as a child to the heavenly Father in faith with petitions, knowing the one who asks receives, and trusting Him above fellow men as mighty and able to do exceeding abundantly above all that can be asked or thought. His Word is to abide within and be treasured in the heart as a priceless treasure and expression of His wisdom, since promises are worth what the truthfulness of the maker is worth and God stands behind what He promises, ever mindful of covenant, always the same, keeping truth forever with no unfaithfulness, His truth enduring to all generations, so that heaven and earth will pass away but not one word of God will fail. Earnest cooperation with the divine will without doubting or wavering becomes the highest incentive involving the soul's eternal interest, to be known as duty and moved in harmony with the Spirit rather than trifled with, and His directions are to be followed whatever the result may be.
Distrust of His Word grieves the Spirit of God. To those who will not hear His voice His message comes in vain, and because they would not heed His reproof but trusted in themselves and did not repent at His rebuke, they shall be surprised and fall and be taken by the enemy.
Those whose words are yea and nay about the same thing stand opposite to Christ in whom is yea. Such double speech is false statement, deception and untruthfulness, from choosing the attributes of Satan instead of God, from a conscience not good and a heart not true that needs conversion and renewal. Such false tongues are not to be dealt with by believers, but the transgressor is to be left with God who reads the heart since Jesus alone can bear the sin, and the less to do with untruthful elements the better for the church. Duty is to rest in the Lord, be still and walk by faith without fearing His work is in jeopardy, knowing God has long borne with the false tongue, will in His own time deal with the deceiver according to His knowledge, will reward every man according to his work, and will give a glorious victory.
Contrary to steadfast character are changing leaders who tear down what was once advocated as truth and refuse the working of the Spirit, which destroys confidence in present assertions of having truth. Messages that weave in human thoughts and accusations, contain what proves untrue, come through an impure unsanctified channel, and encourage deception and sin cannot bear divine heavenly credentials and cannot be in harmony with Him, for He is steady and dependable, not changeable and contradictory. Conflicting private teachings cannot all be right merely because each claims special light, for divine truth does not contradict itself or give conflicting special light to different people, and setting such independent theories against the judgment of the church draws away from the body and fragments the unity required.
The work of God must give a certain sound with no uncertainty, wavering or loss of force but increasing in intensity under the Holy Spirit until the whole earth is filled with its light and power. This is the first, second and third angels' messages blended as a complete whole, and especially the third angel's trumpet call that all must hear to prepare a people for the coming crisis. His work in Christ has the same certainty and truthfulness as Christ Himself, without mixture or changeableness, so even pure truth unadulterated with human spirit and finite ideas is not to be held back in fear because divisive subjects introduced by others have created fear.
