2 Corinthians 11:20
For ye suffer, if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man take of you, if a man exalt himself, if a man smite you on the face. For ye suffer, if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man take of you, if a man exalt himself, if a man smite you on the face.
The verse belongs to Paul's recounting of his own experience in the eleventh chapter. It describes how the Corinthians put up with men who brought them into bondage, devoured and exploited them, took from them and took advantage of them, exalted themselves over them, and smote them on the face. Criticizing others, climbing upon the judgment seat, and pronouncing sentence is a work God has not appointed but has condemned, and those who judge matters by human eyesight make very grave mistakes when they do it. The verse is to be studied and made to talk until it speaks decidedly. The worker coming to Chicago is thereby instructed not to enter into controversy with any man, to obtain a deeper experience, not to seek to be original in a way that brings in odd notions, and to carry the work in a dignified, elevated, ennobling manner. For their own spiritual advancement, instead of judging others, believers should watchfully examine their own hearts, look well to their own shortcomings and defects of character, and remove from themselves the beam of faultfinding, evil surmising, evil speaking, bearing false witness, hatred, and accusing of the brethren.
