2 Corinthians 11:32
In Damascus the governor under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desirous to apprehend me: In Damascus the governor under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desirous to apprehend me:
Paul's preaching in Damascus provoked deadly opposition that placed his life in danger, with his Jewish enemies seeking to kill him. The governor under King Aretas kept the city of the Damascenes with a garrison in order to seize him. The city gates were watched day and night to prevent his escape. They were watched to kill him as he left.
With the help of the disciples, Paul escaped at night when they lowered him in a basket from a window over the city wall. His escape thwarted the plan against him.
Paul's account of his experience in 2 Corinthians 11 is to be studied and made to speak decidedly. Applied to the worker sent to Chicago, it teaches not to enter into controversies with any man and to obtain a deeper experience. It teaches not to seek to be original and thereby take up odd notions, and to carry the work in a dignified, elevated, ennobling manner.
