Paul Holds a Cracked Jar Glowing With Lightby emmanuel_higgins

2 Corinthians 11:33

And through a window in a basket was I let down by the wall, and escaped his hands.

The chapter in which the escape is recorded contains much instruction. After returning to Damascus, Paul preached boldly in the name of Jesus. The Jews could not withstand the wisdom of his arguments, so they counseled together to silence him by force and decided to assassinate him. The unbelieving Jews who sought his life were led by Satan.

Paul thus faced an assassination plot in Damascus to kill him. The city gates were guarded, being watched day and night to cut off his escape and to kill him as he went out. Having been warned that his life was sought, Paul looked for escape. The disciples, anxious for the chosen apostle, drew near to God in prayer with little sleep while devising ways and means for his escape.

At night, by the disciples, he was let down from a window and lowered over the city wall in a basket. This manner of escape was humiliating. So the plot failed, Satan's purpose was defeated, and the Jews were left ashamed and indignant. The chapter shows that people who view matters with human eyesight make very grave mistakes when they take up a work God has not appointed but has condemned, the work of criticizing, climbing upon the judgment seat, and pronouncing sentence. The verse teaches the need for spiritual advancement through watchful examination of the heart, looking well to one's own shortcomings and defects of character, and removing the beam of faultfinding, evil surmising, evil speaking, bearing false witness, hatred, and accusing of the brethren.
