2 Corinthians 2:11

Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

Paul's counsel is that a repentant sinner be forgiven and received back with love, lest Satan gain an advantage, and the church has authority to restore the penitent to fellowship. To get an advantage means to get the better of people, gain the upper hand, obtain a foothold and victory, and take control of minds and work. Devices are deliberate, skillful, carefully planned schemes, wiles, snares, tricks and tactics that Satan steadily carries out to accomplish his object. Ignorance of those devices gives him an almost inconceivable advantage, while becoming acquainted with them takes that advantage away, for Scripture exposes his work to place people on guard. He works most successfully by concealment and in secret, dividing God's people and hindering mission work, but those who know his workings from God's Word and meet him with eternal vigilance, watching and prayer, close the door against him.

Wording and Immediate Context

Paul's counsel in 2 Corinthians 2:6-11 is that a repentant sinner be forgiven and received back with love, lest Satan gain an advantage, and the church has authority to restore the penitent to fellowship with Paul affirming its decision in Christ's stead.

To get an advantage means to get the better of people, to gain the upper hand over them by snares, to obtain a foothold in their minds and a victory over minds and work, and to take control where an opening is given. One way this advantage is gained is by stirring up contention and church trials among members who are themselves wrong, contentious and overbearing, so that ministers engaged in a good work where souls are turning to God and to the truth are called away from their fields of labor, souls on the point of deciding are left to unfavorable influences and lose interest, and so powerful an impression can very rarely be made again. It is also gained by setting oneself as overseer to rule the mind and conscience of a fellow worker, for discouraging, enfeebling and weakening fellow workers gives the enemy a foothold and an advantage over their minds that will in time turn back and react upon the one who caused it. No one is appointed to be such an overseer; each is to bear his own appointed burden while strengthening others with words of encouragement, faith and hope and with practical help and improved methods of labor, and never discouraging and weakening them. Satan watches for every chance to gain this upper hand, and giving him that opening leads certainly to error, so to keep him from succeeding believers must trust in the Lord, pray earnestly to be kept by the power of God, put entire trust in God, exercise faith in Him and depend on His wisdom, since looking to human agents for strength is very poor policy and leaves the way open. Giving him advantage means acting in a manner unbecoming to a Christian, feeling abused when the abuse comes chiefly from self, being deceived into conveying to others the impression that brethren greatly abuse you, and dealing with brethren deceptively instead of openly and righteously.

Devices means deliberate, skillful, carefully planned schemes, wiles, snares, tricks and tactics that Satan steadily carries out all the time for the accomplishment of his object, device after device in ways that are not expected. He disguises temptations with an appearance of good, mixes supposed benefits with worldly amusements and folly, and gradually leads people onward toward sin and union with the world, and he can deceive even professed Christians who continue praying and observing religious forms while their hearts are corrupt, making them useful in misleading others. He is a powerful, watchful, mighty commander enemy who directs evil angels and uses deliberate, skillful plans to oppose Christ and hinder the salvation of souls, with continual activity reaching every part of society, into households, public life, streets, churches and institutions, where he brings deception, temptation, conflict and ruin. Christians are vulnerable when they fail to recognize his power, malice and schemes, and ignorance leaves them sleepy, indifferent and poorly resistant, rather than alert to resist his snares instead of trusting outward religion, self-comparison, or treating evil as inevitable or ignoring his existence. One device is the cry of Liberality, which blinds men to what he is doing by supplanting the Bible with human speculations, setting aside the law of God, and bringing churches under the bondage of sin while they claim to be free. Another is to prevent a united charge against him by a united front, dividing believers over points of Scripture not of a vital character, such as the law in Galatians, so that men who claim to believe the truth reveal their true standing before God by lack of earnest prayer and humble seeking for light, and by sarcastic remarks, unchristian comments, ridicule of fellow believers, and excitable exaggerated statements. His agencies invent ways to make sinners out of saints, calling for hatred of sin and watching of every conceivable sin that he tries to make lasting, with the people warned fully beforehand because great changes will take place.

Ignorance of Satan's devices gives him an advantage, indeed an almost inconceivable advantage, while becoming acquainted with them takes that advantage away. He uses cunning and concealed means and skill to turn God's people from the right way, and he may gain his aim and often succeeds when they are not watchful and remain unaware of his methods. He conceals his existence, presence and manner of working so people may follow his suggestions while thinking they act from their own wisdom, supposing they follow their own wisdom while he most readily controls minds unconscious of his influence. Those in greatest danger are those who, despite the direct and ample testimony of the Scriptures, deny the existence and agency of the devil and his angels as a personal adversary who suggests evil thoughts and impulses, for such denial leaves people unprepared for temptation and especially unlikely to recognize his influence or guard against it. His policy is to conceal himself, masking himself with consummate skill so he is painted as ludicrous or loathsome and his name is used in sport and mockery, causing the widespread question whether such a being really exists and the general reception of theories that give the lie to the plainest testimony of Scripture. He spreads everywhere the belief that he does not exist, especially as the close of time approaches when he is to work with greatest power to deceive and destroy, and what he fears most is that people will become acquainted with his devices. For this reason the Word of God gives many examples of his malignant work, exposing his work and unveiling his secret forces to place people on guard against his assaults, so they can recognize his influence rather than mistake his suggestions for their own wisdom.

Satan's Concealment and Cunning

Satan's policy is to conceal himself, his existence and his manner of working, so that people follow his suggestions while supposing they follow their own wisdom, and he works most successfully in darkness and in secret. Ignorance of his devices gives him an almost inconceivable advantage, while becoming acquainted with them takes that advantage away, for Scripture exposes his secret forces and unveils his malignant work to place people on guard against his assaults. He especially seeks to turn God's people from the right way, watching for unguarded moments to harm or destroy, and bodily weakness that affects the mind can leave them doubting and despairing and unaware of his methods. When they are not watchful he can gain his purpose, even using members of one's own family as instruments, so watchfulness is continually necessary.

With consummate skill he masks his real purposes and true character, presenting himself as man's friend and benefactor and as an angel from heaven doing good, while flattering men that there is no rebellious foe, no deadly enemy to guard against, and that a personal devil is fiction. He spreads everywhere the belief that he does not exist, especially as the close of time approaches when he is to work with greatest power to deceive and destroy, and what he fears most is that people will become acquainted with his devices. Those in greatest danger are those who, despite the direct and ample testimony of Scripture, deny the existence and agency of the devil and his angels, because he can most readily control minds unconscious of his influence, and he is painted as ludicrous or loathsome and his name used in sport and mockery to sustain the question whether such a being really exists. Sin blinds people so they cannot discern the deception and honor him as a heavenly angel while he gathers thousands under his control and works their eternal ruin, as he even tried to deceive Christ by claiming to do a good work for humanity. His devices also include transforming himself into an angel of light to lead thousands captive, creeping in imperceptibly serpentlike to corrupt the work of God, taking tremendous advantage through the science of the human mind, and making the miracles and works of Christ appear wholly human.

He is a mighty, vigilant, watchful enemy who directs evil angels and uses deliberate, skillful, carefully planned schemes to oppose Christ, hinder the salvation of souls, and bring deception, temptation, conflict and ruin. He watches people's going out and coming in with strength and skill to turn them from the right way and to hurt or destroy, and his activity is continual, reaching into households, streets, cities, churches, institutions, public life, national councils and courts to perplex, deceive, seduce and ruin. Ignorance of his power, malice and schemes leaves Christians sleepy, indifferent, poorly resistant and vulnerable to his advantage, and at the solemn time when the work is about to close acting as though ignorant of his devices leaves ministers and people paralyzed and unfaithful in watching for souls. Danger threatens at every step, so resistance must be earnest, persevering and alert.

He disguises temptations with an appearance of good and supposed benefit, mixing worldly amusements and folly with claims of advantage, and draws people onward one step at a time toward sin, union with the world and greater wickedness. His devices work by insinuation through little wedges that widen as they make place for themselves, leading to gradual adoption of worldly policy, corrupting the senses, controlling the mind for evil and sowing discord. He can deceive even professed Christians who continue praying and observing religious forms while their hearts are corrupt, quieting conscience with outward religion and self-comparison while making them useful in misleading others. Safety lies in recognizing these snares rather than trusting one's own heart, with prayer, careful self-examination in the light of God's word, a heart truly renewed in Christ, daily attention to one's own soul, and the presence of Jesus which exposes evil and drives him away.

He studies character and circumstances and fits the snare to the occasion, attacking weak points to defeat God's purposes, gain control of the mind and blind understanding, so that those overcome trust themselves and believe they are spiritually strong when they are morally weakest. He is a keen observer who marks words and takes account of actions and then skillfully adapts his temptations to those who place themselves in his power, and when believers place themselves in temptation they are almost always his prey. He cannot read the thoughts of men, but unbelief indulged, doubts expressed, darkness cherished and lack of self-control encourage evil angels and open the way from within, which is where he gains his advantage mainly. If sinful thoughts and feelings are repressed and given no expression in words or actions he is defeated, because he cannot prepare his deceptive temptations to meet the case, and the call is therefore to distrust self, watch, pray and resist from the beginning.

He has device after device and carries them out in ways that are not expected, inventing ways to make sinners out of saints, so that some do not realize the danger and great changes take them unprepared unless warned fully beforehand to hate sin and watch every conceivable sin he tries to make lasting. His great success lies in keeping minds confused and ignorant of his devices, for then he can lead the unwary blindfold. His devices are no minor deception but a masterly education gained over years, using deception and delusion so great that if possible even the elect would be deceived, seeking to annoy, harass, falsify, accuse and misrepresent all whom he cannot compel to give him honor and help his work. Ignorance amid thickening dangers must be met with watchful supervision and humble walking before God distrustful of own wisdom, realizing personal danger and God's keeping care, for wilful ignorance through trusting own wisdom and capabilities is presumptuous and its penalty is loss of the soul.

Devices Dividing God's People

Satan weakens God's people by dividing their faith and hearts so they cannot present a united front, and he exercises this power especially upon the remnant near the close of time when he comes down with great power knowing his time is short, seeking to divide and scatter them so their efforts lose force and they are overthrown. To keep him from gaining this advantage requires moving understandingly with united efforts of the same mind and judgment, observing order and union in regard to order, drawing nearer to God and to one another, and laboring for harmony even at personal cost. This calls for being well balanced and avoiding extremes, firm as rock to duty, molded by no influence except the Spirit of God, cherishing affection and love instead of growing hard, unsympathizing, critical and cast-iron in soul, and having Jesus within every moment to make one kind, pitiful and courteous. The warning applies with special force as the end approaches, when leaving church affairs unsettled and disorganized lets means and resources slip into his ranks, so wisdom requires acting together, establishing order, securing the work, handling funds openly in counsel, then trusting God to overrule. The same warning guards the unity God is joining, especially keeping medical missionary work united with the ministry of the gospel rather than separated.

One planned device is stirring up contention and church trials among members who are themselves wrong, contentious and overbearing, so ministers doing a good work where souls are turning to God are called away from their fields of labor. When souls on the point of deciding for truth are left to unfavorable influences they lose interest, the result of labor is lost, and so powerful an impression is very rarely made again. The same stealing of a march occurs when ministers are drawn from communicating what they know to learn more, when time, study and projects are given to matters God never intended, and when the treasury meant to sustain ministry is diverted to common things while ministers are half paid and begrudged, robbing a perishing world of labor and living testimony under the Holy Ghost.

He keeps the mind dwelling on past trials, neglects and errors of brethren until they are magnified and viewed in a wrong light, and he keeps minds dwelling on doubts and discouragements. This leads to fretting, discouragement, disappointment, loss of confidence in others, taking the case into one's own hands instead of leaving all in God's hands, disheartenment, loss of courage and hope, injury to health and to physical and mental strength, harassment and annoyance, and loss proportionate to successful labors with danger to eternal interest. Neglect to move at all times in the counsel of God places souls on his ground and opens them to temptation, and every such time he gains the advantage. Such talk of doubts does not correct the problem but weakens the speaker and spreads discouragement to others, giving room to annoy and distress. Faith, hope and courage, and talking faith, hope and courage, with trust in Jesus as friend and keeper remembering His love and past care and relying on His protection, closes a door he loves to enter to harass, annoy and weaken, and unbelief and distrust must not be cherished.

Harsh criticism and bitter feelings give him advantage by leading a servant of God to wound others and do the enemy's work, and when brethren hurt one another's feelings they greatly mar God's cause. Criticism is one of his devices to discourage, perplex and dishearten, and refusing it means refusing to measure God's workers by human measurement, taking the truth into the heart, making Christ's words for guidance part of the life, standing where God can bestow rich grace to make character Christlike, and helping, uplifting and strengthening fellow workers. Shutting him out requires refusing to yield to the enemy in humble reliance on the Lord rather than contention, with everyone confessing every wrong and taking every stumbling block out of the way of others so the Spirit pardons and heals the wounds sin has made. Discouraging and weakening fellow workers by setting oneself as overseer to rule mind and conscience gives the enemy a foothold in their minds, and that foothold will in time turn back upon the one who caused it. No one is appointed overseer of fellow men; each is to carry his own appointed burden while strengthening others with words of encouragement, faith and hope and with practical help by suggesting improved methods of labor, never discouraging and enfeebling them.

He gains advantage by flattery and faultfinding, tempting people to pursue a course that brings admiration and praise, with bewitching snares to draw servants away from holiness. His devices make a person elated by flattery and depressed by faultfinding and keep them satisfied with superficial knowledge, so the call is to recognize, shun and turn away from them, refusing to be lifted up or cast down, and living as servants of the living God. He also gains advantage through lack of self-control and Christian courtesy, through impatient feelings expressed in word or action, failure to harmonize, unhappy discord, cool unsympathetic impressions, and a spirit not in harmony with Jesus Christ from a wrong attitude before God and wrong feelings toward brethren. Anything that mars and wounds another becomes a temptation and discouragement that can balance a soul in the wrong direction, and when workers disagree, stand apart and fail in love and unity he obtains advantage. Being not ignorant is to be guarded, to criticize self, to do nothing rashly, to do and say nothing that tempts or discourages any soul, to place a right estimate upon every soul by looking to the cross remembering each is precious as the purchase of Christ's blood, to come into a different attitude before God and toward brethren and seek God together, and to blend in harmony despite different temperaments by giving up one's own way, respecting and helping each other, guarding words, keeping the tongue under perfect control, and never speaking sharp, uncourteous words or suspicious suggestions. It also requires seeking advice and cheerfully taking counsel, having more confidence in others' judgment than one's own, letting others plan and expend, being willing to be inconvenienced, undergoing active transformation as a willing scholar molded after the perfect Model, with daily prayer for keeping.

He works through bewitching supposed new light whose arguments are as clear as mud, disjointed and out of harmony with the message, yet minds take hold under a bewitching power so that no explanation can make them understand. Those acquainted with his workings feel an inward chill of alarm at such teaching, and exposing the snare breaks its power and balances the mind where it can be helped, though it takes time to work fully clear. Another device is the cry of Liberality, which blinds men to what he is doing, supplants the Bible with human speculations, sets aside the law of God, and brings churches under bondage of sin while they claim to be free. Claims of spiritual enlightenment based on impressions while turning from Scripture lead to confusion and ruin, discredit the Holy Spirit's work, and cause neglect of the strength the Spirit provides, including through extremists' false claims. Knowing his devices also means recognizing how he works through doubt, false ideas about God and His work, and people who lead others away from truth and undermine confidence.

His devices include carrying health reform to extremes so reaction comes, setting time for the Lord to come, making remarks to obtain revival on false grounds, moving passions to get up a stir where feelings are moved and principle does not control, and giving fanatical ones anything they can seize to create excitement on a wrong basis, which grieves the Spirit and surely brings reaction, so due caution must be used in every word. They include noisy confused meetings, wild demonstrations, shouting, superstition, fables and strange religious performances falsely presented as sanctification and the descent of the Holy Spirit, which dishonor the Lord, imperil His people, disgust unbelievers instead of convincing them, and once started unchecked are as hard to quench as fire in a building. Not being ignorant means keeping the Lord's work elevated, pure and unadulterated from fanaticism by close connection with Christ, and those who enter into and sustain it would do better to engage in secular labor than continue their inconsistent course. A subtler deep-laid deception works from within while trusted and supported, claiming inspiration of the Holy Spirit while acting entirely contrary to the Word, exalting a hobby of the Holy Spirit, sanctification and Christ alone to make all doctrines of no value, going from house to house with wicked falsehoods, giving no intimation of purpose until ready to make a break and carry the church, refusing open intercourse and fair opportunity to answer, finding fault with every minister, uniting with the apostate in accusing brethren, and seeking a rival work to oppose present truth. Being not ignorant means testing every claim by the plain directions of the reliable eternal Word, remaining true and steadfast to principle, and discerning such lying, accusing, divisive plotting as the great apostate's working repeated on a small scale as in Lucifer's rebellion, so the first step of accusation is dangerous ground and persisted in becomes despite to the Holy Spirit placing one beyond recovery.

He prevents a united charge by a united front through dividing believers over points of Scripture not of vital character, such as the law in Galatians, while even those who should be experienced remain largely ignorant of his workings so he takes them unawares and gains great victories. Men who claim to believe truth then reveal their standing by lack of earnest prayer and humble seeking for light, and by sarcastic remarks, unchristian comments, ridicule of fellow believers, and excitable exaggerated statements. Discernment is urgent because with his whole confederacy he is stirred to intense fervor, working in secrecy through agencies from beneath faster than calculated, with plans already made waiting only a favorable moment, all things getting ready for the last great crisis while believers contend over little matters and draw apart, with great changes very soon and final movements rapid on the eve of some great event. It is not God's will for His people to stumble over one another or remain deficient in understanding His mighty works, and though limited experience cannot fully take in His marvelous works, they must be content to do their best with determination to work upward as overcomers rather than downward to be defeated, quickened by the Holy Spirit, wise as serpents and harmless as doves, watchful, zealous, earnest, with unceasing prayer and an eye single to God's glory, weighted with truth and filled with Christ's love for souls.

Devices Hindering Mission Work

Satan invents plans to enfeeble churches and keep God's work from taking root so they cannot overcome evil, and one such plan is to lead men to center all means and energies on labor for the poor, debased and outcasts, drawing support from the churches while neglecting worldwide needs, though it remains duty for some called to that work to save perishing souls in that class. He plays for souls by securing means and binding it up so it cannot advance missionary enterprises, stupefying the senses of God's people so they withhold the free-will offerings needed to warn a world asleep and dead in trespasses and sins, and believers must give willingly from hearts burdened for souls so the perishing may have everlasting life. Near the close of earth's history his deceptions become more pronounced to divert minds from God, including making unnecessary or misdirected spending appear worthwhile and thereby weakening support for essential gospel work.

When people live apart from Jesus and rely on their own judgment they fail to discern His voice and counsel and become ignorant of Satan's devices, and then they adopt measures that seem right and wise but are prompted by Satan to impose a human mold and human interests on God's work and dishonor God. Plans that appear wise may be instigated by Satan, and if those plans guide God's work God will be dishonored. He obstructs God's purposes by leading college managers to reason by worldly standards, copy worldly plans and imitate worldly customs so their decisions do not meet the mind of the Spirit of God. He makes publishing houses, colleges and health institutions special points of attack, leaving no means untried to cripple their usefulness and putting even those connected with them in danger of shipwreck of faith, and discernment requires not rejecting heaven-sent light but using it hourly to distinguish sacred from common and eternal from temporal.

His device is to allure even one soul, especially the young, to unfaithfulness and slothfulness so that through that one he influences others to indifference and formality, and therefore workers must know his tactics, be strong in the Lord, draw near to God, watch and pray, resist the enemy and throw every faculty into God's glory. He also devises obstacles to prevent preparation for missionary service, as when a young Maori pressed to remain at a funeral nearly missed his journey to school in Melbourne, escaping only by slipping away in time to catch the train. He invents every possible scheme to separate those whom God is seeking to make one, especially by separating medical missionary work from the ministry of the Word in home and foreign missions, and the two lines must not be separated but carried forward as one with workers trained and laboring in connection with the church and ministry.

He gains full advantage and control of church affairs when matters are left unsettled and at loose ends, and he works with every effort to dishearten, perplex and trouble the remnant, especially as the end approaches and events ripen for the great day of God. Safety requires eternal vigilance and decided strength of purpose lest he beguile through specious devices, moving understandingly, acting wisely, staying awake, leaving nothing undone to place church business in a secure state and secure church property for God's cause so work is not retarded and dedicated means do not slip into his ranks, then trusting the Lord to overrule. Openness helps prevent deception, by taking people into counsel, interesting them in the work and laying matters openly before them so they know how invested funds are handled.

He works with all his hellish arts to keep convicted souls from deciding for Christ, for though the Holy Spirit convinces of sin and need of a sin-pardoning Saviour, if truth is not applied decidedly to the heart with timely words calling for decision from the weight of evidence already presented, the golden opportunity passes and the convicted go farther from truth and Jesus without identifying with Christ. Knowing his devices requires ministers not merely to convince of sin generally but to lift up Christ, make His claims plain, urge decision just now to be on the Lord's side, and make personal determined efforts without halfway work or discouragement, with the spirituality, earnest appeals, activity and zeal present where Christ's Spirit is. Neglect of missionary work, touched only with the fingertips, leaves many unwarned and ensnared, and apparent success in some lines becomes a device when it makes believers self-satisfied and causes retreat instead of pressing the battle to the gates, so the whole church must be aroused to prayer with pride, selfishness, ambition and self-esteem expelled.

He gets an advantage when the warning message and light heaven is ready to give to cities are cut off and left in darkness for years, through unbelief weaker than faith, talking discouragement and seizing on everything objectionable, men keeping the foot on the brake in board meetings and refusing to let work move, and turning means sent for the Southern work for colored people into other channels, so that reaching those cities becomes far more difficult. Missionary workers must therefore have grace and wisdom for the wrestling contest with principalities and powers of darkness, for Satan and his angels are close at their elbows to counteract every effort and turn aside efforts so truth finds no access and the city is warned in vain. Not being ignorant requires doing missionary work with prayer in the streets for angels round about, coming close to people instead of feeling work done after giving a paper or securing names, watching and praying continually, staying connected with God and rooted in truth, walking in Christ's steps with Jesus present every moment, sensing Satan's arts and snares instead of remaining sleepy and stupid, and making salvation of souls first always rather than selfish interest.

Nehemiah knew his devices when Sanballat sent an open letter charging him and the Jews with planning rebellion to make himself king and appointing prophets to preach of a king in Judah, demanding counsel together. That report was wholly false, feigned from Sanballat's own heart and sent open so the people would read and become alarmed and intimidated, written to arouse fear and draw Nehemiah into a prepared snare. All such attempts aim to weaken the builders' hands so the work is not accomplished and frustrated, and the one not ignorant sees through them, refuses fear, and turns to the Source of strength with prayer for God to strengthen his hands to finish the work.

He works through men connected with God's institutions who reject light and choose their own perverse way, becoming decoys to lead souls from truth by undermining confidence and planting seeds of doubt and questioning, hating reproof and refusing guiding light, yet the church need not remain confused because Christ's warnings are definite and plain. He steals a march when ministers are drawn from fields to learn more instead of communicating what they know, when time, study and projects go to matters God never intended, and when the treasury meant to sustain ministry is diverted to common things while ministers are half paid and begrudged, so a world perishing in sins is robbed of labor and living testimony under the Holy Ghost. He gains advantage when God's work is not handled wisely, as in managing the school in California, and when workers do it in an easy half-done manner, for he and his agents are sharper than careless workers, always planning, devising and laying nets to take souls unawares and outgeneraling them almost every time. Not being ignorant means refusing to leave the field open but throwing soul, body and spirit fully into God's work so the field is preoccupied by God and heavenly angels, with vigilance in establishing institutions like sanitariums so he gains advantage over no one.

He weaves himself into work God has not assigned and uses it to absorb resources and divert them from other missions, influencing and controlling the mind through such schemes. Those placed to build up the work must do it themselves rather than expect others to do it while they officiate, put away selfish feeling so the enemy gains no opening, and those in responsible positions must venture something and run risks with determined perseverance. He lays snares to separate the Wessels family from the cause entirely, and that advantage is prevented by moving wisely with no unwise movement, trusting God, going forward in humility, and praying and working for every member with Christ's tenderness to melt hearts, so souls at stake are saved and Peter Wessels made a man of honor and truthful integrity.

Knowing his devices equips those who preach truth with wisdom so he does not accomplish the ruin of precious souls before their eyes, for he plays the game of life for souls and ministers must make God's work primary and other interests secondary, watch for souls, work faithfully to repulse the enemy and gain victory, and need not become discouraged or driven from the field because a Source of strength is at command. Close connection with Christ strengthens believers to withstand human and satanic schemes that hinder the saving gospel, so ministers need discernment and must avoid rash actions that stir prejudice or weaken the work of truth-bearers. Being not ignorant also requires pleading before legislative councils for independent judgment and worship according to conscience so God's law is brought before highest authority, manifesting kindness and true courtesy at all times, showing no bitterness, and praying constantly for divine aid.

Devices in Personal Family Life

Hasty, passion-led marrying and giving in marriage is one of Satan's special devices for getting an advantage, and he succeeds with it almost every time. It works by leading men and women to disregard counsel, question every warning, plead self-will in carrying out their own purposes, and marry at all hazards because they cannot overcome their own wishes and inclinations. Those caught do not consider the matter carefully and prayerfully, do not leave themselves in God's hands to be guided by His Spirit, have no fear of God before their eyes, and think they understand fully without wisdom from God or counsel from man, so that passion carries them over every barrier of reason and judgment, advice is thrown away, and when too late they find a mistake imperiling happiness in this life and salvation of the soul, costing years of anxiety and sorrow that could have been saved. The young are especially endangered by entanglements that estrange them from God and make them powerless in His work, and few escape when they fail to recognize the danger and guard against it.

He finds easy access to women absorbed in self and dissatisfied in marriage, telling them they would be happy with another husband, a temptation that can lead to dishonoring husbands and breaking God's law. He also works through confidences and sympathy-seeking that gratify pride, corrupt the mind, foster evil thoughts and romantic fantasies, and breed dissatisfaction with married life that distracts from the duties and contentment of real life. A bewitching spirit of familiarity between men and women that breaks down the reserve and modesty that should exist is satanic in origin and working, a snare and delusion rooted in the heart. A soul once tainted by that power must be truly converted or he will go over the same ground again and become less able to withstand it. Withstanding it requires faith fastening and feeding on Christ with the mind dwelling on unseen eternal realities, entering by faith and hope into the city of God, its streets and mansions and praise to God and the Lamb, which gives peace and confidence and lessens danger of being led astray and desire for human flattery or praise, for weakness and lack of true propriety come from dwelling little on heavenly realities, and earthly objects absorbing thought and affection are displaced only when the mind is weighted with superior eternal things and charmed by the rich promises of God's Word so common earthly things appear as dross.

He gets an advantage when watchmen are blind to their own course, especially in coarse commonness and improper liberties with married women and girls and in close mixing that confuses the senses and lowers moral standing. When leaders in sacred trust lack discernment and spirituality they become careless sentinels, and their example molds characters with less religious experience, deforming character and demoralizing the institution, because others quickly plead excuse to imitate men in important positions until perverted ideas are woven into other minds and characters. That unseen working is like poisonous roots and leaven in a public institution, constantly springing up to produce a harvest of evil next to impossible to eradicate and whose full extent will only be revealed in the judgment. The same danger appears when a man in responsible position claims more authority than his place grants, pursues a course he would condemn in another, and feels himself above temptation.

He watches going out and coming in with strength and skill to turn from the right way and to hurt or destroy, and works most successfully in darkness against those ignorant of his devices, while he could not gain advantage if his method of attack were understood, so resistance must be earnest and persevering. One method is using members of one's own family as instruments to transmit his fiery darts, magnifying an unintentional word or act of a loved one before the mind to pierce it. This leads to bracing against supposed injury and standing for what are termed rights instead of praying for strength to resist, which gives him double advantage by acting out aggrieved feelings and using the wounded one as agent to wound those who intended no injury, while calmly yielding and submitting even when it conflicts with feeling saves from unhappiness and gives victory over temptation. Understanding that secret working helps prevent him from gaining that advantage.

He gets advantage over children by devices working through their parents. When susceptible though wayward hearts of boys and girls are impressed by truth from a teacher of truth, he counteracts that impression by words and actions of father or mother, bringing temptation through father or mother so they fall prey to him, and evil sentiments from injudicious parents who do not cooperate are the chief hindrance to genuine conversion, making it almost impossible to set children's feet in safe paths, while deep symmetrical piety appears early when the means God ordained for family guidance is followed in His fear and love with correct training and discipline. Parents who rejected God's instruction and example helped harden their children in rebellion with lasting spiritual harm, calling for vigilance and for guiding children with earnestness, kindness, and a courteous spirit. His manifold devices begin to work upon tempers and wills of children as soon as they are born, so eternal vigilance must be kept and safety depends on wisdom and vigilant care of parents striving in love and fear of God to preoccupy the garden of the heart, sowing good seeds of right spirit, correct habits, and love and fear of God. Parents, especially mothers, can get the advantage over the enemy during the first six or seven years by giving special attention to physical training rather than intellect, leaving children free like little lambs to roam and play, teaching them themselves instead of sending them to books or school, using inquisitiveness about nature to instruct and patiently answering questions, thus fortifying minds by sowing good seed and leaving no room for bad to take root.

He seeks to gain ground by controlling minds of youth and leading inexperienced feet astray because the young are ignorant of those devices. Because of that ignorance and danger in perilous times, parents must be awake and work with perseverance and industry to shut out the first approach of the foe, instructing children continually when they go out and come in, when they rise up and sit down, line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little. Teachers must recognize responsibility for influence exerted and guard the young carefully against these schemes and snares. He is wide awake to get advantage through side issues and special influences besetting school life, and many young men and women are ignorant of his devices. Not being ignorant requires watching for souls as those that must give account, keeping vital connection with God, and charging time, speech, and influence continually with good as witnesses for Christ, with young men and women influencing each other for good by words and influence, right example impressing hearts as angels cooperate with everyone on the right side, and victory meaning rejecting cheap words and example in sport and frivolity and showing transformation by the Spirit in sweet, heavenly, life-giving words, deportment, and grace.

Parents who have turned from God lack wisdom to perceive snares threatening children and fail to guard them, so parents must actively teach truths of God's Word and reasons for faith. Indulgence allows rebellion to grow stronger, and parents need wisdom from God to recognize schemes and resist snares. Discerning his devices requires clear minds with physical appetites kept under control of reason and conscience. Vigorous action of higher powers of mind is essential to perfection of Christian character, usefulness in this world, and final salvation, and ignorance of God's law in physical nature leaves the mind clouded, because intemperance of any kind violates laws of being and brings higher faculties into subjection to animal appetites and passions. His devices include making sin attractive by throwing a covering of light over it, and holding the Christian world in daily habits under tyranny of custom like the heathen, so appetite governs them.

Cardplaying and gambling fill the mind with vain hopes and schemes, while wine, beer, and tobacco foster harmful appetites and degrade God-given powers, yoking people to Satan and making freedom from his control difficult. Proving knowledge of his devices means standing the test of temptation, especially of animal nature and moral defilement. It requires laying aside ambition to enter the ministry, taking humble employment with physical labor with the hands rather than work with the brain, perfecting Christian character humbly by revealing Christ in life and deportment, tearing rotten timbers out of the character building and putting solid timbers in, thus working out personal salvation while God works in the person to will and do of His good pleasure. He gets advantage when people have no time to attend to their own souls, to examine daily whether they be in love of God, and to place themselves in the channel of light, for then they will have time for his suggestions and working out of his plans. His devices are specious and work by insinuation through little wedges that widen as they make place, leading to gradual adoption of worldly policy, and these devices will be brought into the special work of God at this time.

He succeeds when business cares consume the mind and leave no time for Bible reading, private prayer, religious meetings, or regular praise and thanksgiving. When people neglect worship and do not choose God as counselor and defense, secular thoughts, unbelief, vain confidence, and philosophy displace humble faith, and temptations may then be mistaken for the True Shepherd's voice. Safety requires cherishing right principles in the heart and carrying them into every business transaction. A pleasure-loving life dulls discernment so people may fail to recognize the Holy Spirit's guidance and his devices, and when temptation comes they are more likely to fall and be led away from God. Walking circumspectly as children of God requires much prayer and refusal to enter worldly amusements and entertainments, exerting firm decided influence against amusement and folly which counteract serious impressions on the mind. Blocking his advantage requires clinging to Jesus by living faith, standing firm as rock to principle, preserving integrity at any cost, keeping the mind elevated above cheap fashionable sports enjoyed by the frivolous, working in humility for good of others, crowding in good works freighted with prayers, being true to duty, bearing testimony and exercising gift in prayer rather than remaining novice or dwarf in religious exercises, growing steadfast when mocked, and pressing to the mark for eternal riches, for the angel with the writer's inkhorn marks only those who sigh and cry for abominations done in the land while those uniting with follies and sins of the age are passed by.

Intimacy that turns a person from God and truth is his device, as when a young man's intimacy with a girl led him to reject a godly mother's counsel, neglect Bible study and God's service, and risk eternal interests, and had he humbled himself and heeded warning the device would have been broken. He harasses with distressing circumstances and troubled thoughts to provoke distrust and lead toward shipwreck of faith, yet his devices need not overcome, for God will uphold those who trust themselves to Him and let Jesus carry burdens. The belief that the Lord has forsaken a troubled believer is such a deceptive thought undermining faith, calling for recognizing the deception and resisting through earnest prayer and loving careful treatment that puts no stumbling block in the way. He seeks advantage by hidden devices aimed at destroying peace, but believers need not be ignorant and can name them for what they are. He can appear in form of a man, speak a person by name, tell a tissue of lies about family, then vanish, as in claiming to have just left a man's wife with a pleasant interview when no visitor has been there, to fill the mind with jealousy and suspicion toward a wife. Knowing this device means refusing to doubt a faithful word, refusing retaliation, and holding peace undisturbed, which defeats the lie and can turn attack to good when fear leads the unbelieving companion to give up wicked feelings and begin to pray.

He gets advantage when a person is sick, worn, weary, and pressed sore with discouragement under burden of writing and extra labors borne for the church, leading to wrong feeling and speaking toward her husband, which must be acknowledged as error. He watches for opportunities to use careless words and conduct to damage influence, so vigilance is needed to guard words and influence since accompanying angels watch constantly and careless conduct can grieve them. He gains advantage when people act hastily instead of watching and praying, and decisions made in haste can have lasting consequences, so next steps are not to be rushed. Constant guard is necessary because the political condition of the world gives him opening to get the better of believers. His advantage is drawing them into a fascinating deceptive delusion prepared as snare for souls, belonging to a time of great unrest in religious and political world when many disturbing things unsettle minds and keep people in uncertainty. Providing women physicians to examine and treat women closes one such door through which he may enter to ruin families.

Wise rules and regulations can restrain and guard young people from his devices, leading them in paths of peace. He can gain advantage through a moment of carelessness, when selfish ease or self-gratification may undo years of faithful labor. Those responsible for others must remain alert, since an irreligious life can harm others as well as bring condemnation on oneself, and safety depends on walking with God. His devices gain advantage when people rely on own strength and are careless about weaknesses and dangers, while depending on God for strength, subduing self, and cultivating caution guards against wiles, error, and false ways. He patiently lays snares for inexperienced youth, so teachers must recognize responsibility for influence exerted and help guard youth against those snares.

Knowing and Resisting Devices

In the last days Satan works with greatest power, and his activity is especially abundant, deceptive and corrupting as the conflict against truth intensifies. His deceiving power will become so great that if possible even the elect would be deceived, so discernment sharpened by divine enlightenment to know the Spirit that is of God and recognize how he works is urgently needed. God gives help, light and grace suited to need to those who walk in truth, with peace, courage and confidence, and mercy and truth to the contrite and obedient, yet merely knowing truth is not enough unless it is received with earnest faith and applied in daily life with humility, careful steps and continual seeking of divine guidance.

Believers need not remain ignorant or be overcome, for God's Word guides them and Jesus teaches what God requires and how temptation comes. The soul nourished in Christ, living a Christlike life of self-distrust and grasping Christ's hand more firmly as temptations press, gains sharp sensitivity and keen perception to discern tricks. Truth, the Word of God and faith in His Word serve as armor and weapons of warfare, answering every advance of the enemy with It is written, which trains the soul inch by inch for sterner tactics. Feeding on Christ by eating and drinking the flesh and blood of the Son of God means being doers of His Word with sound solid experience, as the branch receives nourishment from the vine, giving power to recognize delusions including masterly miracle-working claims that he is Christ. Those controlled by feeling who crave what is new and strange and startling and sensational instead of feeding on Christ have no root, are unsound in understanding the Word, and will be carried away.

The rich endowment of grace given with the indwelling Holy Spirit makes wise unto salvation, patient, forbearing, quick to perceive and appreciate heavenly ministrations, and strong to resist sin and opposing influences. Spiritual eyesight and power from above enable discernment of the enemy's danger so as to warn others faithfully. This discernment is kept only while the mind constantly goes out after God in prayer and communion with Him who is the source of strength and wisdom, through constant prayer, living faith, and confession and forsaking of sin with reliance on Jesus. It is lost when worldliness comes in and desire to pray and commune ceases so the Spirit will not abide, for unbelief shuts out grace and God cannot do His mighty work where it reigns. Teachers and students must therefore be guarded by the Holy Spirit with the truths of God's Word as the foundation of education, lest human interpretations presented as necessary for higher learning mislead many by falsehood appearing as truth.

Knowing his workings means seeing dangers threatening souls, seeing where and how individuals fail to perfect Christian character, and seeing what results will follow if a course is followed or traits indulged. This comes through God revealing the needs of His cause and the cases of individuals in every phase of experience, showing what He approves and condemns, and through training and discipline therein, then instructing and warning others line upon line, precept upon precept. Understanding the conflict between Christ and Satan, the work of redemption, and God's protection prepares people to withstand his devices. He works to keep people unaware of God's purposes by obstructing light sent through chosen messengers, especially concerning what is coming upon the earth, and when eyes are closed to light and truth the cause is weakened and his work advanced. Religious teachings must therefore be carefully tested so as not to be misled by what opposes Christ's example and God's service.

Close fellowship with God enables discernment of spiritual things, while diligent Scripture study and earnest prayer for divine help prepare people to resist temptation instead of becoming helpless prey or being swept away without firm grounding in God. Watching, praying and believing souls need not be caught, for heaven stands ready to give wisdom and strength to meet future trials, temptations and duties with faith and perseverance. His temptations corrupt the senses, control the mind for evil, sow discord, and lead step by step into greater wickedness, but Jesus' presence protects, exposes evil and drives him away. Safety requires eternal vigilance as the price of safety, with most decided strength of purpose lest he beguile through specious devices, a warning even more essential now when everything is ripening for the great day of God than in Israel's time.

Distrust of self, watchfulness, prayer and readiness to resist are required because he carefully studies person and circumstances and fits the snare to the occasion, and those who place themselves in temptation are almost always his prey. Temptation must be resisted at its beginning, for sin is one's own act that no earthly power can force: the will must consent and the heart yield before passion can master reason and overcome truth and justice. Every path to temptation must be closed against a cunning and perceptive enemy who causes harm when given opportunity, with constant spiritual readiness and awareness of his efforts. His efforts include provoking to retaliate, so trials should be expected and met by prayer and trust in God's Word.

Against his device of deluding the heart while leaving outward religious form intact, close self-examination is necessary. That delusion leaves a person carnal at heart with only an outside new dress put on, rotten instead of sound, holding secret sin and iniquity and unsacrificed idols, given up to a heedless careless vain spirit that attends religious duties only to quiet conscience. The remedy is bringing self up to God's tribunal to see as in God's light what is hidden inside, in the light of God's Word, with prayer as never prayed before not to be deluded. He can draw even professed godly persons corrupt at heart toward worldly pleasures and amusements while they suppose they gain good, and use their profession to mislead others, so the heart must be truly renewed in Christ rather than resting in outward forms. Earnest prayer and self-examination must search out cherished idols, carelessness and merely outward duties lest one remain deluded and unprepared for eternal life.

Genuine faith working through love, a life practicing truth, and the Holy Spirit are essential safeguards against deceptive devices. Humble fellowship with God and earnest watchfulness against selfishness and unrecognized sin keep them from taking mastery and leading into his net. Inherited or acquired habits that draw away from following Jesus and copying His example must not be cherished, for unnoticed sins or habits can gain mastery over mind and character and entangle in his snare. Freedom in Christ and freedom from bondage to sin, appetite and disposition are required in unceasing warfare, with healthy Christians refusing slavery to appetite, putting away all sinfulness, and distinguished by perfecting holiness in fear of the Lord through voluntary surrender of all to God as stewards of His grace. Unless heart, mind and will are in complete subjection to Christ's will with discordant natural elements brought daily and hourly into unity with His character through full surrender without reserve, a person will surely be overcome and fail of salvation, though in a heart controlled by His Spirit unruly debasing tendencies and passions cannot reign.

Loving Jesus, dwelling on His matchless charms and learning His love makes pure, harmless, undefiled, surrounded by an atmosphere of faith rather than doubt, skepticism and unbelief. Talking of Jesus, heaven, Christian duty, Christian warfare and resisting Satan rather than like vultures preying on supposed defects of others turns weapons against the most deadly foes. By faith the believer sees pure light and heavenly angels marking devotion with love, and sees Satan watching every misstep to take advantage of lack of union and love, making crooked ways and through his agents accusing God's devoted workers before angels with exulting triumph, so feet must stay in the narrow path of holiness and give no occasion. In serving others to strengthen the weak and give hope to the sinking, believers learn to recognize and meet his attacks on God's work.

Pharisaism, jealousy and evil surmisings expose to his assaults, requiring waking from spiritual sleep and avoiding carnal security. Safety is to stay alert, watch, pray and work, relying on God rather than human wisdom, which without daily consecration and the Holy Spirit is powerless, blinds and distorts judgment. Ignorance leaves workers vulnerable to serving the prince of darkness while supposing they serve God, whereas living faith and earnest prayer let sentinels share the divine nature and see deceptive schemes. He seeks control especially when the mind is unguarded and can mislead even those trusting their own intelligence into claiming to correct Scripture. Nothing is so to be dreaded as ignorance of his devices, which fills life with sentimentalism, human sympathy and attention, double-dealing and perverted powers, following hereditary tendencies, much book reading and believing every spirit instead of drawing sentiments from earnest searching of Scripture, following the True Shepherd, trying spirits whether they are of God, and discerning between false and true Christian life and character.

Those in hard and trying places of responsibility obtain his advantage when they stop feeling dependence on God, trust own wisdom and lose confidence in ministering brethren. As long as dependence is felt they are kept from grave blunders and from distrust of the standard of truth that would do great harm, so faith, prayer, help from others, daily consecration and never being off guard for a moment are required. One appointed to a post of duty works for Christ and must always remember this and never be ignorant of devices, depending on Christ for grace and partaking of the divine nature, for without this remembrance and dependence there will be failure. Missionary and medical workers must individually have grace, wisdom and pure holy conversation with humility to work effectually in wrestling with principalities and powers of darkness, for spiritual warfare allows no heedlessness. Satan and his angels are close at their elbows to counteract every effort and turn aside efforts by devilish craft so truth finds no access and cities are warned in vain, unless as they walk the streets they pray for grace and angels round about them, watch and pray continually, stay connected with God and rooted in truth, walk in Christ's steps with Jesus present every moment, and sense his arts, gins and snares instead of remaining sleepy and stupid with self intruding. Constant vigilance, self-examination, decided change and freeing from baleful influences that corrupt the soul are necessary lest without change there be shipwreck of faith and the cause of medical missions be humbled instead of exalted. When selfish interest is made first and salvation of souls secondary, he gets the start and advantage, for that is working on his side; salvation of souls must always come first with clear foresight, discernment and faith to snatch souls from his path.

Knowing his devices does not mean giving heed to everything he devises, feeling compelled to work out every incomprehensible problem to meet him, or keeping the mind reined up to thwart him. God is supreme, a stronghold in trouble and perplexity and an all-sufficient Guide, so safety is entire trust in Him with faith, fearing not and not becoming discouraged, considering not what human beings can do but what the Lord Jesus can do. Giving him opening leads certainly to error, so believers must trust the Lord, pray earnestly to be kept by God's power, depend on His wisdom, wait patiently and humble under His mighty hand for help as frontguard and rearward, watching, praying, working and carefully guarding words to give him no handle. Looking to human agents for strength is very poor policy and leaves the way open. God sits above the earth with heaven and earth at His command, sees all confusions and every device, and knows need before asking, while man may err but God cannot err. He works by pretensions and appearances deceiving finite judgment, with prejudices, weaknesses, self-deceptions and ignorance prompting steps in forbidden paths hurtful to the soul and wrecking present happiness and higher interests, so safety requires looking to God for guidance in perplexity and carefully studying His Word through life's journey to the haven of eternal rest, leaving no excuse for ensnarement to ruin.

What he fears most is that God's people will clear the way by confessing and forsaking every sin and removing every obstacle, so the Lord can come into assemblies and pour out His Spirit in blessing and awakening upon a languishing church and impenitent congregation. If he had his way there would never be another awakening great or small to the end of time. Known and resisted in Jesus' strength, he can no more hinder the shower of blessing when the way is prepared with subdued contrite hearts, confession, putting away sin and faith claiming promises than he can close heaven's windows so rain cannot fall, nor can wicked men and devils hinder God's work or shut out His presence. He gains his advantage mainly from within rather than from the world, through indulged unbelief, expressed doubts and cherished darkness that encourage evil angels and open the way. He cannot read thoughts but keenly observes, marks words, takes account of actions and skillfully adapts temptations to those placing themselves in his power, yet if sinful thoughts and feelings are repressed without expression in word or action he is defeated for lack of material to meet the case, while lack of self-control opens the door. Worldly ambition, status and position, and an atmosphere of unbelief weakening faith and hope, become snares turning from the Saviour unless defects are overcome and every power brought under God's will.

Separation from corrupting companions is required, for temptations carried by influences that lead astray and corrupt morals are not overcome while remaining under them. Purity, stability and firmness of principle formed through enduring hardship, poverty, adversity and trial without murmuring give strength in spirit like Christ to resist. Through daily prayer and watchfulness God gives wisdom and grace to bear conflict, maintain integrity under discouragement, retain fidelity and serenity, increase in fortitude, stability and endurance, and come off victorious. Every wrong habit must be overcome to stand clear, for every thought and action is known in heaven and open to angels even when unseen by associates, and angels are commissioned to minister to those striving to overcome. His enchantments steal away senses and deaden feeling toward highest interest, leaving the heart cold, insensible, hard and indifferent to God's love in the gift of His Son, giving affections free play in life's little matters while binding them as by magical cords in eternal interest. Freedom comes only by looking to Jesus the Author and Finisher of faith, exercising and cultivating love for Him, yielding allegiance and breaking his cords. Rejecting God's love exposes to his cruel power, while showing mercy and helping those in trouble keeps off his ground, whereas merciless treatment brings harm on its doers.

Coming into a right attitude before God and toward brethren guards against being overcome, for a wrong attitude with feelings not in harmony with Christ gives his devices their victory. This requires humbling the heart before God, seeking Him together to be helped and blessed, putting the heart in order, overcoming self, and becoming like Jesus in words, spirit and conduct with humble obedience. Neglect to warn, reprove and exhort leaves others vulnerable and leaves the neglectful not guiltless. Recovery for those yielded to his devices and on his ground in his snares requires through God's mercy close connection with God, daily crucifixion of self and thorough transformation unto victory and eternal life. Being unaware of how he works leaves one forsaking God without seeing danger, not knowing what spirit one is of, under a spell needing diligent repentance and converting power lest one be left to perverted ideas, secured to his side through temptations, exchanging leaders, linking with worldlings and talking their language, denying received truth and voicing his sentiments while possessed as Peter when he denied his Lord; when the spell is broken through personal surrender and dying to self the person becomes reconverted, meek and lowly.

Guarding on right hand and left so he gains none means keeping near God in simplicity and humility, aroused to duty, with the spirit and sanctifying power of truth in the heart by watching, praying and relying fully on the merits of the Lamb who takes away sin. Integrity with consistency in faith and practice and calm Christlike conduct amid trouble answers his aim to catch off guard and prompt impetuous acts. Keen sanctified perception to know well-laid plots and not yield without opposition is to be used in discerning signs of the times, not in criticizing and condemning one another, and keeping the heart with all diligence keeps firm believers from carelessness and shipwreck. This calls for practical separation, taking families from cities into more retired localities lest youth and older ones be ensnared. Commercialism and chance must be given no room, for they can deceive even the elect and open the door to great temptation. He takes advantage when believers are confused by rootless professors who talk loud and long with hearts not in the work, unsanctified, scattering rather than gathering with Christ and at last giving up faith, whose longer remaining only harms truth and prepares another's backsliding. While angels hold the four winds and every soul is tested in very short time, he ensnares every soul not making God his strength, and every defect unovercome by God's Spirit becomes sure destruction, so God's people must be energized by truth and fully established.

Entering solemn work for others unbidden and unprepared gives him place to make the most of advantage when lives are uninvestigated, wrongs uncorrected without deep heart-searching, earnest prayer, fasting and close self-examination of life and motives, and iniquity still regarded so the Lord will not hear and answered prayer would only exalt self. Giving no place requires faithfulness in little things, true integrity in all conduct, self dead with life hid with Christ in God, and constant remembrance that angels take cognizance of every act and what is meted to others will be meted again. The Lord gives wisdom and help so the self-denying who trust Him are not left prey. Every guilty helpless person threatened with destruction by his arts and snares is the object of Christ's loving shepherd interest who gave His life to bring men back to God. At the solemn time when work is about to close and his agency is seen on every hand, acting as though ignorant leaves ministers and people paralyzed and unfaithful in watching for souls. Knowing his devices calls each member to awake and each laborer to remember the vineyard is not his own but his Lord's gone on a long journey, to look after his Lord's interests in His absence and give account at His return, watching continually, praying always, keeping garments unspotted to meet Jesus in peace.

Vigilance against provocation to retaliate, with trials expected and met by prayer and trust in God's Word, and refusal to yield in humble reliance rather than contention, defeats him, while spiritual discernment to see clearly what is spiritual reveals God's will and keeps the high Christian standard from being lowered. Those who know his devices will plead before legislative councils for independent judgment and worship according to conscience so God's law is brought before highest authority, manifesting kindness and true courtesy at all times, showing no bitterness and praying constantly for divine aid. Depending on God for strength, subduing self and cultivating caution, instead of relying on own strength and carelessness about weaknesses and dangers, guards against wiles, error and false ways. Closing the door requires laboring for harmony and presenting a united front to enemies and believers, for he gets advantage through divisions and pulling apart. It requires being well balanced, avoiding extremes, firm as rock to duty, molded by no influence but God's Spirit amid surrounding perils, cherishing affection instead of growing hard, unsympathizing, critical and cast-iron, and having Jesus within every moment to warm the heart and make kind, pitiful and courteous like Christ. Standing in strict obedience to the Word, one in mind and judgment, blending in harmony despite temperaments, giving up one's way, respecting and helping each other, guarding words with tongue under control and never speaking sharp uncourteous words or suspicious suggestions, gives no occasion for good to be evil spoken of or souls prejudiced against God's workmen.

Human effort must combine with divine power to accomplish the closing work, for the Spirit blows where it pleases and none knows beforehand through whom manifested. Faith, hope and courage, and talking faith, hope and courage, close the door he loves to enter to harass and weaken when grievances and errors are dwelt on till magnified, hope and courage lost and openness to temptation follows. Unbelief and distrust must not be cherished in doubt and perplexity, but Jesus trusted as friend and keeper, His love and past care remembered, and His protection relied on. Walking humbly distrustful of own wisdom, realizing personal danger and knowing God's keeping care, with cautious steps and continual divine guidance, counters subtle last-day devices, for truth merely known without earnest faith and daily application avails nothing. Ignorance is wilful and presumptuous, the result of not watching and trusting own wisdom and capabilities amid thickening dangers, and its penalty is loss of the soul. Those helping truth-seekers must therefore watch for discouraging and intimidating temptations when work meets resistance or seems fruitless, act with discretion knowing when to speak and when to be silent, and watch for souls with accountability, seeking godly counsel, for he may approach not openly but under appearance of friendship, goodness or unjust persecution to mislead the inexperienced, weaken discernment and draw into unbelief.
