In this present earthly tent life, believers groan under its weight while earnestly desiring to be covered with their house from heaven. That heavenly house is the eternal home God has prepared, a lasting building not made with hands, so that they are covered and not left bare. The longing is not to be stripped of the body but to receive the heavenly covering, so that dying mortal life is overcome and swallowed up by everlasting life.
The verse comforts those who feed on Christ by faith, because Christ lives in them and they in Him, so even if they die His life in them remains. Even if the believer dies, the life of Christ in him is eternal and he will be raised at the last day to live forever. These words give strong consolation to all who feed on the banquet of God's Word, giving them an experience of the highest value that shows human words are like chaff compared to wheat beside God's Word.
