2 Corinthians 7:13
Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all. Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all.
Paul and his companions found comfort in the comfort of the Corinthians after they had been corrected. Their own consolation was bound up with the response of those they had reproved, so that the restoration of the erring became their encouragement. Their joy was increased exceedingly because Titus himself was joyful. His spirit had been refreshed by all the Corinthians, and that refreshing became the ground of their fuller rejoicing.
That comfort and joy rested on the Corinthians' godly sorrow having led to repentance and earnest care. Such repentance gave Paul confidence and joy in them. Reproof of wrong must therefore be given as a friend to the erring, anxiously explaining its reason, making clear that it costs pain to give pain, and showing confidence and sympathy toward those struggling to overcome. When given in this way, sorrow becomes godly sorrow unto repentance that works earnest care, clearing of self, indignation, fear, longing, zeal and avenging, and approving purity in the matter. When one at fault becomes conscious of his error, his self-respect must not be destroyed, and he must not be discouraged by indifference or distrust or by withholding confidence until he proves he will hold out, because such distrust causes the tempted one to stumble.
