2 Corinthians 9:11

Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God.

God enriches His people in every way so that they can give generously to meet the needs of others. That generosity works by the rule that sowing sparingly reaps sparingly and sowing bountifully reaps bountifully, each giving as purposed in the heart, not grudgingly, for God loves a cheerful giver. The means thus entrusted are to be held as a trust from God, not for selfish gain or hoarding, but to help the poor and suffering, supply His treasury, and advance His work. When need is supplied through the givers, those who receive give thanks and glory to God and pray with love for those who gave. Giving in this way does not exhaust what is given, but the open hand is refilled and enriched still more toward continued generosity and eternal reward.

Words and Original Setting

The verse is part of Paul's appeal to the brethren at Corinth to make a contribution for the poor saints at Jerusalem. He seeks to kindle their zeal and stir them to benevolent action by presenting the example of the churches in Macedonia. The appeal is made without command, by setting forth need and by presenting the giving of others who had fewer advantages and less ability in order to induce giving. Such tangible liberality to meet the necessity of the church at Jerusalem is the very best evidence of the sincerity of faith, with love expressed in deeds. Every converted soul who appreciates the rich endowment of God's gifts becomes greatly benevolent, being enriched to sustain every good work and advance the kingdom, and complete Christian character requires returning to God His due from His vineyard by counterworking selfishness and self-indulgence.

The verse belongs to the lessons and liberal spirit of 2 Corinthians 8 and 9, which must be studied, heeded, and kept ever before the people. It carries a message in which the duty of everyone is plainly outlined to do their best, and it stands among rich promises to those who reveal by good works in daily life the virtue and power of faith and self-denial. The whole chapter is a practical lesson to be lived out. Those chapters teach how to assist by giving to lift debt, for money is God's money coming from His people and must be handled in His fear, with God cooperating with those who handle it rightly. They teach the liberal spirit needed to support the cause, giving generously rather than withholding funds needed to advance work in foreign fields.

Even the poor bring tithes and offerings longing to see the work advance, while selfish handling sways the whole cause into selfish lines. Applied to debt, all are to do something to let the institutions stand in freedom and fill up the gap, and those who give will feel it only as blessing for coming up to the help of the Lord. The verse belongs to the experience of the early Christian church, where Spirit-stirred believers responded to the needs of the work by denying self and giving offerings for the proclamation of the message. Their joyful, unselfish liberality for those in need was attended by wonderful blessing and threw them into transports of joy. Their giving showed they knew the power of God was being carried to the needy, their benevolent energy testified that they had not received the grace of God in vain, and such liberality comes only from sanctification of the Spirit through the Word, standing in the eyes of believers and unbelievers as a miracle of grace and a testimony to grace.

God's Enriching Provision

God enriches people in every way so that they can give generously with all bountifulness, and that generosity administered through them and through those who serve causes thanksgiving to God from those who receive and share the gift. He enriches His people in everything unto bountifulness, and believers are enriched in every way to liberal, generous giving.

That enrichment is His making all grace abound toward the giver to give always all sufficiency in all things for abounding in every good work. He ministers seed to the sower and bread for food, multiplies the seed sown, increases the fruits of righteousness, disperses abroad and gives to the poor, and gives a righteousness that remains forever. The cheerful giver who purposes in the heart and sows bountifully and not sparingly, grudgingly, or of necessity reaps bountifully, for God loves such a giver and meets purposeful bounty with full sufficiency.

What is supplied is entrusted means to be held in trust with daily acknowledgment that God is the Giver to whom account must be given, who gives strength to labor and opens ways to gain earthly treasure. It is not for selfish gain, hoarding treasure, self-exaltation, extravagance, or personal gain only, and the world with its habits, practices, and customs is not the standard, nor is personal inclination to lead; the will is to be brought into conformity to His will, life conformed to Christian principles, and investments made wisely with an eye single to His glory for greatest usefulness. It is for meeting others' spiritual and material needs, helping the poor, needy, suffering, ignorant, afflicted, and oppressed, supplying the treasury with gifts and offerings, supporting His work, moving the standard of truth forward in regions beyond, and bringing glory to His name, with the needs of the poor a reason for the wealthy to draw on resources.

The enrichment comes by bringing to Jesus the available means, time, and ability, like barley loaves that though enough for only one are multiplied in His hand to feed many, so that honest, simple reliance is rewarded and a meager supply becomes a rich feast. It comes by Christ abiding in the soul as a well that never runs dry, making inward principle visible in overflowing beneficence, acts of love for the needy, and provision for the destitute. It comes by heaven's light shining into the heart and grace constantly imparted while sowing beside all waters and ministering gospel truth in word and deed in Christlike simplicity, talking the truth and praying the truth. It comes by faithfully handling the Lord's money, being strengthened day by day to understand His will and be faithful in least as well as great, reflecting His benevolence in deeds of mercy, and acting as Christ would act in that place, with God cooperating and refilling the open hand to keep giving and to carry the treasure of truth to many souls.

Being enriched to all bountifulness belongs to those who deny self and sacrifice, take hold themselves, and stop constantly spending for what can be done without, and rich blessings flow upon them because of that self-denial and self-sacrifice. Having the need met from outside can deprive them of that blessing, while means cruelly wasted in selfish gratification, when placed in God's treasury, brings blessings in return to those who give it.

Principles of Generous Giving

The law of the verse is that sowing sparingly reaps sparingly and sowing bountifully reaps bountifully, with the harvest proportionate to what is given. Each is to give as purposed in the heart, not grudgingly or of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver. God is able to make all grace abound so as to give always all sufficiency in all things for abounding in every good work, dispersing abroad and giving to the poor with a righteousness that remains forever. He ministers seed to the sower and bread for food, multiplies the seed sown, and increases the fruits of righteousness.

Property, money, strength to labor, and opened ways to gain earthly treasure are God's means entrusted to stewards who must give account to Him as the Giver. They are to remember daily that God is the giver of all held in trust, to be faithful in handling the Lord's money in what is least as well as what is great, and to understand His will day by day by His rich grace. The will is to be brought into conformity to His will, with watchfulness to make wise investments with an eye single to His glory, reflecting back His benevolence in deeds of mercy and acting as Christ would have acted in their place. The world with its habits, practices, and customs is not the standard, personal inclination is not to lead to extravagance or self-exaltation, hoarding is forbidden, and life is to conform to Christian principles for greatest benefit and usefulness to others.

Giving is the work of the Holy Spirit, not requiring great wealth or education, coming only from sanctification through the Word, and shown in tested and proved love for Christ and for neighbor by devoting both means and self. That love is shown in erecting churches, feeding every little flock with meat in due season, and giving the last message of mercy to the uttermost earth, with those who have physical strength laboring with their hands to earn means for God's cause and those who can obtain work laboring faithfully and improving opportunities to help those who cannot obtain labor. Success does not come from one worker's ability, for God gives talents and the increase, and His servants are to share the labor and the gifts so His work is carried forward. Bountifulness includes both sustaining God's cause and giving personal attention to feed and clothe the poor, relieve suffering brethren, and break every yoke of oppression that comes to notice, and zeal for sustaining the cause never justifies neglecting the poor and oppressed, for to neglect them while claiming to give for the cause misrepresents the character of Christ. Relieving physical needs can open hearts to the gospel, with God causing the seed of truth to grow toward eternal life.

Prosperous institutions and those bearing responsibilities must not from selfish ambition, jealousy, and desire for power center all means on their own interests. They must restrict their own wants and encourage and sustain other fields where the work is less prosperous.

Thanksgiving and Further Blessing

Being enriched in every way unto all bountifulness means generosity administered through the givers and through the ministry that supplies the needs of fellow believers causes thanksgiving and glory to God through those who receive, share, and benefit. The liberal distribution to the needy and to all proves subjection to the gospel, strengthens brotherhood, and closes the door to jealousies. Kindness and love shown in relieving the poor and the oppressed awaken thanks and praise in needy hearts that flow back to God, with angels joining the songs of praise from human lips. That thanksgiving is accompanied by prayer and longing love for the givers because of God's exceeding grace seen in them.

Such good works deepen love to God and increase love for the truth, and sharing spiritual and material gifts brings further grace and supports good works. Relieving physical needs can open hearts so the seed of gospel truth grows toward eternal life, for giving includes both meeting temporal needs and sharing spiritual truth. Giving to advance the truth as it is in Jesus provides a fund to draw from to sustain the work in its different branches.

Giving does not exhaust resources but enriches the giver in everything toward continued bountifulness, for the more is given to God's cause the more God enables giving. Constantly imparting is constantly enriched with more to impart, the hand is refilled and opened to impart still more, and the way is opened to receive more so the treasure of truth can be carried to many souls. When believers advance in faith into straight places relief of means comes to supply faithful workers and advance schools, sanitariums, and the spread of truth's light, and blessing rests on both receiver and giver. The deed uplifts and strengthens in this world, is recognized as laboring together with God, lives in heaven's record, and brings reward in the future eternal world, while means cruelly wasted in selfish gratification when placed in God's treasury through self-denial brings blessings in return.

God faithfully rewards obedience by enriching with grace and means to supply His treasury unto testimony and thanksgiving. Murmuring and complaining darken the pathway of the murmurer and of others, and failure with little inclination to express thanksgiving for being thus enriched is a failure.

Both small and large offerings are acceptable when given for God's glory, and enrichment comes by bringing available means, time, and ability to Jesus like barley loaves that though enough for only one are multiplied in His hand to feed many. What seemed a meager supply becomes a rich feast, for Christ rewards honest, simple reliance on Him. Success increases as abundance is freely shared with the struggling, and giving helps carry the treasure of truth to many souls. Even children's self-denying offerings for God's work and the giving of poor working people with large families dependent on daily labor, giving to their power and beyond in deep poverty without waste or selfishness to erect a humble church and help brethren in hard times, are blessed and made useful to lead to thanksgiving.

Practical Calls to Give

Being enriched to all bountifulness unto thanksgiving to God means giving practical help to the hard, destitute Southern field instead of neglecting it. The entire profits of books designated for that field were to be used there rather than diverted by deception to fields having far better advantages in every way. Design and facilities originate in God's treasury, and neglect after light and calls to attention is increased and will be met in judgment according to regard for His purposes and specified methods. More is required than beginning late where work should have begun years ago; restitution must be made of diverted means.

The same enrichment calls believers to practical service that supports the Colorado Sanitarium and helps it carry out its work. It calls for self-denying provision for proclaiming the truth, including the work in Washington. It teaches the liberal spirit of giving generously rather than withholding funds needed to advance work in foreign fields.

Applied to debt on the institutions in Scandinavia, the verse means that God's money coming from His people must be handled in His fear, with God cooperating with those who handle it rightly. All are to do something to let those institutions stand in freedom and fill up the gap, and even the poor bring tithes and offerings longing to see the work advance. Those who give will feel it only as blessing for coming up to the Lord's help, while selfish handling sways the whole cause into selfish lines. The verse applies to devoting both means and self to erect a humble church where poor working people with large families dependent on daily labor can assemble to worship God and let their light shine to others. Giving to power and beyond power in deep poverty is blessed, with all that one has and is belonging to the Lord to be used without waste and without selfishness to help brethren in hard and trying times, and a timely gift for building a house of worship illustrates how willing giving supplies need and brings gratitude to God.

God enriches liberal givers with means to supply the necessity of faithful workers and to help advance moves in the cause, including schools and sanitariums and the spread of the light of truth. When believers advance in faith into straight places, relief of means comes, and blessing rests not only on those who receive but on the giver, whose liberality is recognized of the Lord and causes thanksgiving from those who receive the light of truth, as a laborer together with God who will by and by receive a reward. Abundance entrusted is not for selfish gain or hoarding but to meet others' spiritual and material needs, support God's work, and bring glory to His name. It is to be used in faithful stewardship to help the poor, needy, suffering, ignorant, afflicted, and oppressed, with the needs of the poor a reason for the wealthy to draw on resources. This giving includes both temporal relief and spiritual truth, for personally feeding and clothing the poor and oppressed deepens love to God and awakens thanks and praise, and relieving physical needs can open hearts so God causes the seed of truth to grow toward eternal life. Even what seems a meager supply, like barley loaves enough for only one, becomes in Christ's hand multiplied to feed many and a rich feast rewarding honest, simple reliance.

The verse belongs to instruction parents are to read, understand, and practice, applied to children's self-denying offerings for God's work, which through God's blessing can be made useful and lead to thanksgiving to Him. Enrichment for every good work comes when continually imparting received gifts while sowing beside all waters, with heaven's light in the heart and grace constantly imparted, ministering gospel truth in word and deed in Christlike simplicity by talking the truth and praying the truth. Success does not come from one worker's ability, for God gives talents and increase, and servants should share labor and talents so His work is carried forward. Success increases as abundance is freely shared with the struggling, and such giving helps carry the treasure of truth to many souls.
