2 Kings 10:23
And Jehu went, and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of Baal, and said unto the worshippers of Baal, Search, and look that there be here with you none of the servants of the LORD, but the worshippers of Baal only. And Jehu went, and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of Baal, and said unto the worshippers of Baal, Search, and look that there be here with you none of the servants of the LORD, but the worshippers of Baal only.
Jehu and Jehonadab the son of Rechab went into the house of Baal to search and make certain that none of the servants of the Lord were present there, but worshippers of Baal only. This entering and separating belonged to Jehu's work of destroying Baal worship in Israel. That separation led to the killing of Baal's worshippers and the destruction of his temple, so that Baal worship was removed from Israel. The action was part of a campaign that removed the priests of Baal and Ashtoreth and destroyed their altars. It belonged to a stern reform that resulted in the destruction of the house of Ahab, at a time when the altars of Baal were being forsaken.
The removal of Baal worship was a merciful act that took away temptation so that some in Israel might forsake heathenism and turn to God. Jehu's conduct here is also an example of self-reliant harshness in which self rises up in unbefitting words. Zeal must therefore not become harsh and damaging speech, but those seeking to win souls should speak gently and tactfully.
