Jehu had been proclaimed king by the army and hastened to Jezreel to execute those who had deliberately chosen to continue in sin and to lead others into sin. Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel in connection with that work of judgment. The destruction took place together with the slaying of Jehoram of Israel, Ahaziah of Judah, Jezebel the queen mother, and all that remained of the house of Ahab with his great men, his kinsfolk, and his priests.
He ended Baal worship by putting to the sword all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests dwelling at the center of Baal worship near Samaria. He broke down the idolatrous images and altars, burned them, and destroyed the temple of Baal and laid it in ruins. In this way the priests and altars of Baal were removed from Israel and the altars of Baal were forsaken.
This removal was a merciful act in which God took away the temptation of Baal worship. With that temptation removed, some people were helped to turn from heathenism and seek Him.
