2 Kings 11:16
And they laid hands on her; and she went by the way by the which the horses came into the king’s house: and there was she slain. And they laid hands on her; and she went by the way by the which the horses came into the king’s house: and there was she slain.
Athaliah was a wicked usurper of Judah's throne, the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel who carried Jezebel's spirit into Judah. She was the mother of Ahaziah and the grandmother of Joash. After Ahaziah died she seized the kingdom for herself and tried to put to death all of her son's children to remove them from her way. The infant Joash, the rightful king and surviving child of the royal family, was hidden with his nurse in the temple by his aunt, the wife of Jehoiada the high priest, until he was seven years old and could be proclaimed king.
When Athaliah's reign had become corrupt the people revolted in an uprising that removed her from the throne, brought Joash out from hiding, and placed him on the throne to begin his reign under the guidance of the good priest Jehoiada. She was seized and led out of the temple and its enclosure by Jehoiada's supporters carrying out judgment, so that she was not slain in the temple or house of the Lord. She was taken by the way by which the horses came into the king's house and was there put to death at the king's house.
Her death brought her usurpation to an ignominious end, like that of her mother Jezebel. While Jehoiada lived Joash remained under his influence, the house of the Lord was repaired, and the worship of the true God was established again.
