2 Kings 12:18
And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and in the king’s house, and sent it to Hazael king of Syria: and he went away from Jerusalem.
2 Kings 12:18 stands in the closing part of the account of 2 Kings 1 to 12, after Joash the true king of Judah was hidden until he was old enough to be proclaimed king and Athaliah was slain. It belongs to a time when Judah still had good kings at times while the kings of Israel were weak or altogether bad.
The payment to Hazael came after Jehoash had repaired the temple at the instigation of Jehoiada. When Hazael of Syria threatened Jerusalem, Jehoash himself robbed the temple by sending him all the hallowed things dedicated by Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and Ahaziah, and Jehoash himself, with all the gold found in the treasures of the house of the Lord and in the king's house to propitiate him, and Hazael then went away from Jerusalem. The verse is thus one of the vicissitudes of Solomon's temple in which, when the children of Israel departed from the Lord, the temple was neglected and suffered violence, so that the history of the temple is the history of their religious experience.
