2 Kings 12:19

And the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

Joash was the true king of Judah who had been hidden until he was old enough to be proclaimed king, and he was made king when Athaliah, who had usurped the kingdom of Judah, was slain. His reign in Judah began under the good priest Jehoiada, included his submission to Hazael, and ended with his death. The verse belongs to and closes the closing sketch of the acts of Joash, king of Judah.

It stands within the nearly 300-year history in 2 Kings 7-23, covering Israel from Joram to Hoshea and the fall of Israel to Assyria, and Judah from Ahaziah to Jehoahaz. In that history Judah has now and then good kings, while the kings over Israel are invariably weak or altogether bad. Joash stands among Judah's kings in a spotted record in which the kingdom always prospered under righteous, faithful rulers and brought calamity on themselves and their people when rulers turned from God to the grossest idolatry.
