2 Kings 12:21
For Jozachar the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, smote him, and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead. For Jozachar the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, smote him, and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.
The verse records the death of Joash king of Judah and closes the account of his reign. He was succeeded by his son Amaziah. His reign began under the good priest Jehoiada and included his submission to Hazael. He was another young king who repaired the house of God in Jerusalem in a similar way to Josiah two centuries later.
The verse stands in the succession of Ahaziah, Athaliah, Joash, Amaziah, Azariah or Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh, Amon, Josiah and Jehoahaz during the nearly 300 years covered by 2 Kings 7 to 23. Its period was contemporary with the kings of Israel from Joram through Jehu, Jehoahaz, Jehoash, Jeroboam II, Zachariah, Shallum, Menahem, Pekahiah, Pekah to Hoshea, when Israel ended in Assyrian captivity. Its period was contemporary with the ministry of Elisha and the prophets Hosea, Jonah, Amos, Joel, Isaiah, Micah, Jeremiah, Zephaniah and Nahum. It illustrates the spotted record of Judah, in which the kingdom always prospered under righteous and faithful rulers and brought calamity on rulers and people when turning from God to gross idolatry.
