2 Kings 13:9

And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria: and Joash his son reigned in his stead.

Jehoahaz died and was buried in Samaria, and his son succeeded him as king, known both as Joash and as Jehoash. Jehoahaz had reigned seventeen years over the ten-tribe kingdom. During the reigns of Jehoahaz and Joash the kingdom was devastated by Hazael king of Syria and placed under tribute to him.

The succession places the reign of Joash within Israel's history of departure from God. He was the king whom Elisha tried to teach persistence and faithfulness, but he failed to learn the lesson.
